      In 20 years time noone will buy American military equipment because of this. Everyone will go regional .

      This is pure idiocy… you don´t straight up leverage dependence on you to create more dependence. It is more like *“While we totally support the purchase of Gripen over F16, the Gripen radar and electronics are simply inadequate to safeguard our technology and the reputation of our engines. We will only allow the sale if suitable American ground radar systems are purchased along with the Gripens.“*

      Edit: interestingly Colombia/Bogota went ahead with the deal with the Gripens that do have the F414 engine. Deliveries are scheduled for 2026-2032, they are basically seeing if the USA will follow through and actually block it or chicken out.

      The article doesn’t mention about any veto for Ukraine. It says the opposite is likely:

      „In none of these cases is the United States likely to block a close ally on a whim — the Colombia signal was an exception against the 25-year pattern, not a new routine“

      The US approved the deal in May and Saab signed the deal on June 30th.

      As far as I understand it, this event, where the United States supposedly vetoed Colombia’s Gripen purchase, is not true.

      The news about the United States going to veto the Gripen sale on the basis that the engines were reported by defense analyst sites like [Infodefensa](https://www.infodefensa.com/texto-diario/mostrar/5138694/007-colombia-estados-unidos-podria-vetar-componentes-gripen-hechos-ese-pais-caso-venta-colombia) and other South American-based groups. However, the US State Department or other agencies never announced such a veto from their end. I’ve yet to find any official announcement from anyone in the US government announcing they would move forward with a veto. Even [Saab has announced it received no notice of any such veto](https://www.flightglobal.com/fixed-wing/2025/04/colombia-selects-gripen-e-f-as-next-fighter/) regarding the Gripen sale.

      If anything, the drive to veto the Gripen sales seem to have started by the [opposition party of the Colombian government](https://www.aviacionline.com/english/defence/colombia-s-gripen-deal-under-fire-as-opposition-calls-on-u-s–to-block-f414g-engine-exports_a691bb9df2ed6310a84809800), asking the US to halt the engine export until the government can review the terms in the next administration term.

      Since the signing of the [Gripen purchase by Colombia in November 14, 2025](https://breakingdefense.com/2025/11/colombia-signs-3-6b-deal-for-gripen-fighters/), no other news regarding such veto and blockage has came up.

      While the problems of the Gripen’s American F414 engine is indeed a glaring spot given ITAR, the situation with Colombia and the Gripen is not an example nor and event of a US veto being done.

      SAAB has no right to complain about any of the business practices that the US participates in with the bullshittery they routinely commit in trying to sell the gripen.

      This article is garbage and outdated. Gripen was never built to be „free of America.“ Sweden has always developed it’s own aircraft importing components they need to. They chose a variety of American components to create the best fighter they could per their defense requirements. There was no intention to be „free of America,“ and there still isn’t today. Saab and Boeing are, at this very minute, co-developing an aircraft.

      Canada recently stated they were still committed to the full F-35 order but also want localized production of Gripen. To be honest, I don’t see that happening for a variety of reasons, but whatever.

      As far as I’m aware now in July 2026 there still has been no block on F414’s for Colombia’s Gripen order.

      SAAB reversed engineered the motor for the J22 during WW2 (Pratt & Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp) without even having the blueprints. You would not get away with a similar stunt today, but in this spirit let’s have a quick re-engine of the Gripen. Having grown up in Linköping, I know the engineers are just waiting for the call…

      Ach, er kan ook een Engelse of Franse motor in en dat zullen E nu ook zeker overwegen nu de usa gewoon geen betrouwbare partner meer is in zaken.
