    Ist es sicher, Drano Power Gel jeden Monat bei einem durch Haare verstopften Duschabfluss zu verwenden?


    Hallo zusammen,

    Meine Frau und ich leben in einer Mietwohnung in Deutschland und haben immer wieder ein Problem mit dem Abfluss unserer Dusche.

    Ungefähr einmal im Monat verstopft der Duschabfluss stark, hauptsächlich aufgrund von Haaren (hauptsächlich die langen Haare meiner Frau), die mit Seifenresten vermischt sind. Jedes Mal, wenn es passiert, verwende ich Drano Power-Gel und es löst die Verstopfung sehr gut. Nach etwa einem weiteren Monat tritt jedoch das gleiche Problem erneut auf.

    Ich frage mich:

    1. Ist es sicher, Drano Power Gel langfristig so häufig (etwa einmal im Monat) zu verwenden?

    2. Könnte es bei regelmäßiger Anwendung Kunststoff- oder Metallrohre, Dichtungen oder Verbindungen beschädigen? Der einzige Teil, den ich sehen kann, ist eine weiße Abflussöffnung aus Kunststoff.

    3. Ist die manuelle Reinigung des Abflusses eine bessere Option? Ich habe den Eindruck, dass ich nichts abschrauben sollte. Stimmt das tatsächlich, oder ist es normal, den zugänglichen Teil des Duschabflusses zu öffnen und zu reinigen?

    Wenn sich jemand in Deutschland mit einem ähnlichen Problem befasst hat, wäre ich für Ihren Rat sehr dankbar. Mein besonderes Interesse gilt langfristigen Lösungen, die für die Sanitäranlagen sicher und in einer Mietwohnung akzeptabel sind.

      No, it’s not. Not because you’d necessarily damage your pipes, but because that stuff is a nightmare for water treatment plants and it is wholly unnecessary. Get a filter to put over the drain that catches the hair.

      DO NOT, I repeat: DO NOT unscrew the drain. That screw holds the drain and the pipe in alignment. Do not touch it. Ever.

      Besides: If you are diligent in preventing hair from entering and it still keeps clogging out of nowhere, get the pipes checked via the landlord. But make sure you prevented any longer or bunched up hair from entering the drain.

      Absolutely not. This is not for hair removal.

      Also be careful with plastic.

      I did everything as recommended and it destroyed my plastic pipes under the sink.

      Why not buy a drain strainer and prevent the clogging in the first place (at least it being clogged that often)?

      Afaik it can damage the pipes over time, just get a strainer at dm (abflusssieb) so it catches the hair before it makes its way into the drainer.

      If the pipes are properly mounted it shouldn’t. But you don’t know if they are. I would try to put a filter over the shower sink when she showers to minimize the times you need to use Drano. I once had a broken shower pipe that caused water damage. Trust me, you don’t want that. Thankfully we had a bathtub that could still be used.

      Do absolutely not unscrew anything unless you really know what your doing. As for whether it’s safe to use Drano Gel so frequently, I’m afraid I don’t know. I use it perhaps every 5 or 6 months on average. For very similar (or even identical) reasons.

      I would never do that to my pipes once a month. You might be fine, you might not be, but cleaning the drain is really not that much of hassle to risk the issues that a leaky pipe would bring. I only use it if there is really a total clog, after cleaning the drain.

      As for cleaning the drain: Yes, it is supposed to be „serviceable“ by you and while they are all a bit different, it is usually pretty easy. One thing you can do is use a „Haarsieb“ if the shower allows for it (there are different style for the most common types of drains), but even if you can’t find one that fits, you’ll most likely be able to take apart one or multiple pieces of the drain without requiring any tools. If you need a screwdriver or pipe wrench, you’ve gone too far. Anything else should not cause any problems. Most will have some sort of hair sieve, syphon, drain guard mechanism.

      It is literally cheaper to just get a shower drain screen, and you’re less likely to burn a hole in your plumbing.

      Just buy a shower drain hair catcher that will catch majority of the hair and clean after every use…

      i used it once, it helped free my showers drain to become free, but apparently it’s not great for sewage treatment plant…i used it for 12 hours, it also has no heat development like other powdered drain cleaners , so likely your sewage pipes won’t be damaged by it either

      American living in Germany here. I hate the drains. Beat advice for hair: buy a new plunger to use just for the shower. With the water on, or clogged, one good suction and pull will lift out the big hairball. Then grab it (you can use paper towels or rubber gloves) before it goes back down.

      My wife causes the same issue and now that my son has also decided to grow his also curly hair out long it’s twice as much to keep up. My wife and son brush their hair in the shower which helps grab the loose ones so they stay out of the drain but I do clean my hair trap out about every other week.

      Probably better to just get in there and pull out the hair, or better yet prevent it going into the drain in the first place.

      It’s fine if your pipes are not plastic and you follow the instructions. But it if you’re doing it more than every six months or so, you should get a filter for the hair instead.

      I avoid using it more than a few times a year.

      My advice – put a filter in place so hair doesn’t go down the drain in the first place. Now if only my roommates would actually leave the filter there, even after explaining it multiple times…. Ugh.

      If you have roommates who have no respect, what you can also do is grab a pair of tweezers once a month and just pull the hair and scum out onto a paper towel to throw away. This clears up the drain almost as well as Drano without damaging your pipes.

      Get a „Schachlickspieß“ and a knife, remove the pointy end and on the first 5 cm nick it with a sharp knife just a little bit for like 2-4 times.

      Put it in drain and twist. Hair will stick to nicks and twists will collect more.

      Challenge: Dont vomit on pulling out.

      I take toilet paper and get the wood out and flush in toilet.

      Long term solution, put a drain catch and look into that hair loss. Sudden hair loss can be a symptom to other health problems. Another long term solution, become a plumber so it doesn’t cost you an arm and a leg to fix your backed up pipes.

      I am so confused by this threat. You can just unscrew the U-shaped pipe and clean it. Then put it back on. Just make sure that the seal is tight. If it breaks the replacement part costs a couple of euros in a hardware store.

      I used it one time . The only thing happened was my apartment smelled 7 days after chlorine.

      I use a hair filter/catcher every time I wash my hair and every now and then it still gets clogged and drain snakes don’t work to reach the clog so I have used this product twice, I think 3 or 4 months apart and it worked with everything being fine.

      The hair filter does catch a lot of hair so it’s definitely worth using. Once a month is way too often for the draino treatment. I have long hair and thoroughly comb my hair before each wash and still get a lot of hair in the catcher/filter. If I had to use the liquid more often I would call a plumber and make sure there’s not a bigger issue.

      It says to only leave it for 5 minutes, I would follow that closely. It sinks to the bottom of standing water so it can get to the blockage. With a hair catcher/filter you should not need to use it monthly. In my experience catchers can get dirty but I now spray it down with daily shower cleaner after every use because I’m in there wiping the shower to prevent hard water stains anyway. It stays clean much easier once I started doing that. It all sucks and is a chore but that’s just what we deal with having hair and drains.

      In summary, before a hair wash everyone should brush/comb to reduce stray hairs in the shower. Use the hair catcher every time and do what you can to avoid blockage, draino is the last resort and if the problems are cropping up often then a plumber should check it out. If you do end up calling a plumber you can get their advice firsthand about the draino and how often to use.

      I have never needed this in my life for a shower drain. And I have lived in many crappy appartements. You are doing something wrong.

      I just texted my building’s Verwaltung and a guy came with a proffesional machine for cleaning the draining pipes. It workeds better than anything else. And as the others said, just buy a filter for your drain.

      Buy a drain spiral to remove the hair?
      Drano basically turns the hair into sludge. Doesn’t fully disappear.

      Shitty life hack: use draino as shower gel and save on buying two separate products.

      Na, but for real, if you need to unclog your drain monthly, something else is wrong. Buy a drain sieve and empty it after every shower. Sucks, but better than having a clogged drain.

      If possible your wife should brush her hair before showering. (I know it’s more difficult when you have very curly hair.) That’s what I do and the drains are clogged less frequently. If she still loses hair during the shower she should try to collect them and not let them go down the drain. Our drain still clogs sometimes and we use the exact same Power Gel but only twice a year.

      It’s a gamble. It might work but maybe it will partly dissolve the hair and cause an block down the pipes.

      If you can’t prevent hair from entering try to unclog it physically without unscrewing anything.

      I just had a massive blockage in my pipes, which was taken care of last week. The guys told me that the powder-y stuff shouldn’t be used, ever, but gel is fine. I do use a drain strainer now though, and I’m not sure even using a gel this often would be a good idea (not only because of the environment).

      If you need to use this every month then all it accomplishes is to open a tiny hole in the clog. You need to let a professional actually remove the whole clog and then you won’t need Drano anymore at all.
