This is what happens when your farming industry heavily relies on government subsidies.
Scalpers gonna scalp, they thought the outrageous prices would be the new normal, so they built a business plan/infrastructure/enrichment around it.

If farmers in more expensive countries with land that is more expensive is able to sell rice cheaper and still make a profit, then the problem is more likely to be a middleman or some other kind of restrictions.
What the end price is doesn’t matter, the question is how much ends up in the hand of the farmer.
So? When people paid 5000 for rice and went broke where were all this? Adapt or die.
Or adapt and find something to farm?

whether you trust this analyst, his arguement is by increasing the size of land farmed by a single owner from 1hectare to 3h, you half the cost of production. without even doing anything else. and 60% of rice farms in japan are less than 1hec
so to those shouting scale, thats kinda what it is. but scale by merging/consolidations. and how much is realistically realizable considering geographic limitations… who knows.
