We have a bunch of racist old billionaires run the internet. Hate speech is now fair game on X and Musk actively participates in it.
Laws don’t magically make people less shitty. Without enforcement, people will litter, steal, and even murder if they think they can get away with it. In this case, it’s hate speech. They’re just letting their true colors show and nobody is doing anything significant about it.
LDP has been using it to gain votes so no wonder

I honestly want to know what the purpose is of a law with no penalty/enforcement. It seems like a complete waste of everyone’s time. Is this a Japanese thing? What on earth do laws like this actually do?

@u/jjrs …. because the Hate Speech law you mentioned is basically for the benefit of Zainichi Koreans born and bred in Japan. A number of things to remember about Japan, there is no legal definition of racism in Japanese Law, so despite J-Gov Gov signing the UN CERD in 1995, J-Gov is still the only G7 Nation not to pass any legislation against racism. So, although Racism in Japan is held to be unconstitutional, it is still legal.
