So basically a rounding error they’d not have noticed themselves had it not been accompanied by a letter from the regulator.
I’m sure they’ll now definitely change their ways…

Pathetic fine, that’s just the cost of scamming customers out of far more.

And the fine will be given to the customers, right?
CumbrianByNight on
Where’s the £28 million going? There’ll be some compensation to the customers, some legal fees and….the rest?

I successfully took them to the ombudsman and won a compensation plus an apology letter I requested. Bastards

It’s reported that the fine was originally £350m, but after calling retentions they were able to get it down to £28m as a special one time deal.

The fine is equivalent to **0.00717948718 of their profits. So roughly if Virgin profited £1000 they’d only pay a paltry fine of £7. That’ll teach them.**
**The end evidently justifies the means. It’s just the cost of doing business.**

They put me on hold for over an hour to stop me cancelling.
Then I moved to Brisk. One week later virgin media bought Brisk. Now I’m under contract by YouFibre or some crap because virgin changed it all.
I love capitalism.

Virgin Media represents everything wrong with the way these companies work.
I was with them for years, never had a problem and always a good service – Till it wasn’t and I had to deal with their „customer service“.
And, boy – Did i change my mind quickly – it’s hard for me to describe the sheer levels of incompetence I came across, over what should have been a relatively simple matter – I was moving house, wanted to carry on with the same package – You’d think it’d be simple.
Honestly had me doubting my own sanity.
Anyways – I gave up at one point and just left them to it and I sincerely hope they get fined out of existence.
Sorry. Not adding to the post in any meaningful way – Little horror flashback and felt the need to share.

They charged me for two months after I cancelled the contract, it took 4 months for me to get a refund, and they sent it by cheque 🙄

It’s been over a decade since I was with Virgin. Wild horses wouldn’t drag me back into a contract with them.

OFCOM wants to police the Internet, but can’t even stop anti-consumer practices from UK broadband providers.
This doesn’t even qualify as a fine, more like a „Well don’t do it again nudge nudge wink wink“ effort from OFCOM.
And of course no mention of customers being reimbursed or compensation being paid out.

Does this mean they’ll pay me back the £300 the conned out of me?

Used them once years ago as there was nothing else in town, total clowns from start to finish, never again.

Honestly, fuck Virgin. I once had a technical issue and so I called them up. I got passed around multiple times, and each time I had to explain my problem again. Despite the fact that I was always told that not only do they write down the problem, but they’ll pass on my problem before handing the call over. After finding the ‘right’ person, she told me to stay on the line while she looks into the problem.
She came back after 30 minutes to upsell my current package. She didn’t even bother trying to fix the issue, she didn’t even remember what I was calling. She tried upselling. My speed dropped. It dropped to unreasonable levels. What good is paying for a higher speed package if I’m not getting the speed I’m currently paying for.

Scummy company to work for and it appears..to be a customer of.

I mean, it’s good they got A fine. But it’s kinda paltry compared to their profits. It’s loose change.
Gotta start prosecuting those at the top of the ladder. As soon as the first CEO is jailed for five years for illegal business practices, then the rest will immediately stop.

They’ll call you constantly to get what seems like a deal then you’re locked into the contract again for two years. Found it really manipulative but guess its not against the rules. Ended up blocking them

Sounds like their gym operation. Got made redundant and asked if I could cancel or pause membership and was met with a brick wall. Haven’t spent a penny on any Virgin service in 18 years.

I quit Virgin earlier this year for another BB supplier. I was fed up with them giving me a renewal ‚deal‘ only to put up their prices mid-contract – and more than inflation would warrant.
Yes, I was given increasingly good deals when I told them I was leaving but I think I did most of my communication using on-line chat so it wasn’t so bad. I would always recommend using on-line chat to communicate with them rather than calling.
As far as the service was concerned, it was fine – reliable and good speed (I was on a fairly basic plan). When there were outages they were fixed quickly. I would have stayed with them had they not tried to squeeze a loyal customer.
I recently found out that my new supplier intends to introduce mid-contract price increases now (after saying that they don’t do this in a lot of advertising). Can’t win I guess 🤷.

I’m surprised by the comments here. When I moved within contract there was no virgin connection in the new flat. They cancelled the remainder of the contract without issue

£28m fine on profits last year of £3.9bn.
