Kann ich der Einzige sein, der denkt, wenn es bei dem Flaschenrückgabesystem wirklich um die Maximierung des Recyclingniveaus ging, warum haben sie dann nicht andere Barcodes zum System hinzugefügt und sie einfach kostenlos von uns übernommen? Diese grauen Dosen und Flaschen werden nicht aufhören, also warum sie nicht in das Programm aufnehmen und keine Rückerstattung erhalten?

Because they have to pay the shop for each item processed, basically. 2.something cent an item.
Albeit it’s not like those items don’t just get thrown in the shops bin for the shop to deal with!
Just put them in your recycling bin. Why would you be carrying extra bottles to the return machines for no refund?
Because there’s no incentive then? They’ll go in the green bin at home.
The irony here is many retailers charge you for the Return fee and sell you non-conforming stock
Because the fee means that you are incentivised to bring them back, which leads to them being recycled correctly. Its the same reason trolleys need a euro coin, you were gonna leave it in the wrong place if you have a euro or trolley token in there
I don’t understand the OP’s question.
Why haven’t they added what other barcodes to the system? Every bottle and can sold in Ireland is required to have a return barcode.
It’s illegal for shops to sell non Re-turn bottles.
If you know a shop selling them then report yoo your local council’s environment department
Why won’t they refund you for a deposit that wasn’t paid?
Surely you have the cop on to answer this yourself. It would be absurdly easy to abuse that.
The big question is why isnt there a Return app that lets you either scan your receipt and get the money paid into a balance there and then at the machine or tap the machine and have it pay you rather than you pay it if you get me.
I keep getting pinged by my bin company over putting things in my black bin that were too far gone to recycle. If they want to be at that shite why can’t they scan the recycling to find the barcodes and send me my return or take it off my bill?
That bottle isn’t in the scheme so if the machine took it, how would it know it is a PET bottle? The bar code makes everything going into the machine extremely easy to recycle and process.
There’s no return label here. Stop moaning when you didn’t pay it.
Am I the only one who sees a massive opportunity for criminal abuse of the system? You can get a massive shipment (5,000) of small plastic bottles from China for next to nothing (I have checked). Simply print off stickers in bulk (you can get A4 sheets with 40 plain white stickers) with the barcode from a €0.25c can/bottle and lash one on each bottle.
Ok, it’d take a bit of time & effort but 5,000 bottles gives you a return of €1,250. Granted you’d need to be selective about returning them where and when, and obviously that’s more time & effort, but the opportunity for abuse of the system is there.
Because the return scheme is symbolic more than anything. If they really cared about single use plastics, they’d ban plastic bottles altogether the way they did single use shopping bags. Instead it’s easier to put the onus on the consumer because we’ve been sold the lie that our “eco-footprint” is to blame when it’s really the ultra rich and mega corporations responsible for creating the waste and destroying the climate.
Because they have to pay the shops and it isn’t really about maximising recycling. It was about trying to curb people throwing plastic bottles on the ground.
I recycle everything I can. I rarely bought cans and as little single use items as possible. The return scheme hasn’t impacted myself and most other people who do.
It gamified people picking up bottles off the ground. That is about it.
You’ve already got two solutions with non-DRS cans and bottles that end up in your waste
1. Place them in your recycling bin
2. Leave them in the retailer’s „rejected items“ bin. I usually go to Tesco, Dunnes and Aldi and their re-turn machines all have a nearby bin for bottles and cans that can’t be processed.
Because if they accepted all bottles a smart person living near to the border may collect there bottles and bring them to a bottle return site and make a profit! I recently bought some Brew Dog cans in the north (paid no deposit) and was able to return them in the South as its the same barcode, effectively taking 15c off each can

Producers need to pay a small fee (on top of the deposit) to Re-Turn to place their products on the market and to have the barcode added to the system.
No pay, no logo, no deposit; which means the machine have to assume they are not the correct type of plastic and reject them.
Better question would be, where are you even getting these non-return bottles.
Plastic recycling is a scam. Recycling levels in this country is around 30%. Most plastic can’t be recycled more than twice and those are definitely not for food containers.
There are alternatives for plastic and governments should be incentivising them.
Where did that bottle come from? I haven’t seen a coca cola bottle with the logo embossed on the neck like that for years… Also a bit surprised that such a large brand such as coca cola doesn’t have the logo on its bottles.
Is it possible that the shop has imported the stock from a different country and not gone through the usual supply chain? (I’m not entirely sure how it’s enforced tbh as I imagine there’s numerous brands that are bottled overseas then shipped here)
Companies should be responsible for their products packagaging for the life of that packaging
The amount or rationalising to find reasons why this scheme is bad is off the wall ridiculous
The stats seem to prove that it has improved recycling and also improved littering in across the country.
Yet, people whinge and moan. Why should you get a deposit back on a ‘gray’ plastic bottle that you didn’t pay a deposit on in the first place. Just put it in your recycling bin like a normal person
I see someone giving out about the environmental impact of having to drive to the shops to recycle their bottles- seriously? Who said you have to make a dedicated trip to the recycling machine instead of bringing them when you’re going to the shops anyway

They could also add exemptions for registered collectors or tidy towns. My tidy towns do rubbish picks and so many bottles are discarded with missing labels or if we do a piclk in anew area we dont know what are new vs old bottles/cans. There is also a lot a lot of grey marklet too in certain areas, I assume its people or returning workers doing booze cruise type runs and selling it around the estate or among their mates.
Its complete crap that we gather these and bring them to supermarket and half to haul half of them away again to tthrow in one of our members green bins.
Man you got robbed by the shop keeper not the government, go back and collect your 25c and the other taxes they owe.
this is why i don’t care when I see others at the machine with printed and taped barcodes on these.
No idea what you’re on about, but the system is basically the same as Pfand in Germany or Austria, Statiegeld in Belgium or the Netherlands, and plenty of equivalents.
There’s no „fee“ associated with anything.
What you pay is a deposit on the bottle, so that you’re motivated to return it.
Good bottle deposit schemes like in Germany make use of reusable bottles, so the glass and plastic bottles are really substantial, and will go for cleaning and then refilling before ending up back on shop shelves.
It’s like the coin to put into the trolleys at the supermarket – it’s meant to motivate you to return it instead of just taking it home with you, or dumping it in a stream.
Anyone who gets confused with the system hasn’t spent much time in continental Europe.
If it was about saving the planet, they would accept them all, melt them down, put them on reels, and give them away for free to 3d printers.
Forget about making a direct profit from the plastic itself, and maybe get tax from people having side hustles printing stuff, which boost the economy. Maybe from vat as people make stuff that they sell etc.
I am perfectly aware it might not be possible to do with the plastic used in bottles, but then mandate they are made from plastic that can be recycled in this way.
Because it’s a tax. The consumer should not be burdened with the cost of recycling. That’s the manufacturers problem yet they’ve somehow convinced (see lobby) the EU to pass the hassle onto the consumer.
the machines could have been accessible for people in wheelchairs and blind people, they do exist in other countries but Ireland said NO feck people with disabilities.
