I didn’t realize Japanese was so far south.
I never realized how nicely Japan and California line up (with Hokkaido matching Oregon and Okinawa matching Baja California). They’re like twins!
I guess if I had to say where I thought Central Asia fell I’d probably overshoot southwards. My impression is that Uzbekistan is roughly level with the lower Midwest, with let’s say Bukhara at Saint Louis’s latitude. But it’s about a degree farther north than Saint Louis.
This illustrates the three main factors that determine the climate of a given location, in order of relative importance: latitude, altitude and continentality (distance from the ocean). For eg Kazakhstan can get bitterly cold (-40⁰C/F) because of its location.
Where’s Amernia?
So, I am from Kyrgyzstan. I once has been to Utah, and it did reminded me of parts of Kyrgyzstan, though I feel Utah is drier. Latitude ones they are also compareable – Salt Lake City is at 40.75 N, Bishkek at 42.87 N
