Burning back scrubland can actually be beneficial, removing a source of fuel for fires later in the season. They are actually advising areas in Australia to burn material during winter months when it can be better managed to avoid catastrophic wild fires during the summer months. I would imagine this is farmers burning off dead grass to encourage new growth but the question needs to be asked why we are still farming mountain areas when they really should be national park.
