Flatter him every once in awhile, gift him a useless ‚peace prize‘ trophy or something and he’ll be on your side, you just gotta make sure you’re the last one to talk to him before the cameras roll.
While the media is hyper focused on Trump, because that is super easy and they can piggy back off of the mass of reporting on American politics, I think they are missing a more important story: how will European alliance + Canada secure Turkyie’s commitment to common defense and how will they hash out Turkyie’s newly expansive security policy?
With America officially checked out of NATO (they updated their expected contributiom to European defense to ancilliary technical support, satellites etc. and minimal combat unit deployment), Turkyie is the largest military actively committed to the alliance. In an emergency, they can supply much needed bulk against Russia – or pose a major problem to European security.
Their role is critical and very complicated. There has been major tension between the EU and Turkyie over human rights, including Turkish efforts to force Euro countries to adopt anti-blashephy and anti-antagonism to Turkish policy exceptions to free speech laws, over Armenia, over trade and some other irritants. Turkyie is also trying to make itslef a power in a wider region, with major deployment plans for Syria and Somalia, and a hard look at North Africa.
But they are NATO’s big black sea power, and control Russia’s access to the middle east and Africa, and have a sizeable MIC.
The vulnerability of Europe for the next 3 years at least gives Erdogan a lot of leverage, and part of this conference being held in Turkyie will also be aimed at making sure Turkyie is soldily committed, and hashing out problems in Europe-Turkish relations.
