I guess there won’t be clarity about anything while this administration is in power. I think instability is the card they are playing

The purpose of a trade agreement is to promote consistency. Why have an agreement that changes every year?

I mean according to Mexico Leblanc never even showed up for meetings so id assume he does need clarity on wtf is going on.

>“We don’t have any more predictability about the annual review process because this is somewhat uncharted territory. It’s not typical for this kind of agreement,“ Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc said in a telephone interview Friday.
Was it not him a month or so ago saying how it was not a big deal and nothing would really change

Let’s be honest- nobody wants to say it out loud, but Trump is effectively a lame duck president. He will lose the House in the midterms and a decent chance he loses the senate too.
Canada and Mexico are playing nice and running out the clock until there is a new administration. They are betting it will be a Democratic President next and then the whole tariff nonsense can go away and a renegotiation and extension can actually take place.
This is really what is happening and Canada and Mexico plan to “negotiate” each year until there is a more reasonable administration on the other side.
Most of the world is just waiting it out at this point. Everything with the U.S. is just get by without them, reduce your risk and wait for endure for something better.

I would never expect myself to say it, but Freeland didn’t look so feeble and confused when she negotiated with Trump

Even if any kind of deal/concessions it will mean nothing as they will break their word/agreement. The EU is going to introduce a digital services tax and Trump has said he will impose a 100% tariff on everything and it will supersede any signed deals
>He warned that the punitive penalties would be applied immediately and would completely „supersede“ any existing bilateral trade agreements.
No clarity needed here. The US want to limit investments in Canada, and this is and this move will help create fear, uncertainty and doubt – deal killers for FDI. It may not benefit the US in any significant way but it’s a practical way to screw us.

„Clarity“? How is it that every country in the world has been able to reach some sort of deal by now with the USA except Canada? We dont need clarity, we need a government with the faintest idea they know what they are doing. As it is, they have even given up on getting that one single bridge opened.

So what does the review process entail? Does it release the U.S. from binding arbitration? Lets sure hope not.

I mean, in the long term Canada will be fine. We have resources the rest of the world wants, as long as we build the roads and rail and ports to get the product to other markets we’ll slowly wean off America.
It was America’s 100 year plan to try and connect the Canadian economy with America’s, because they know that as soon as Canada connects everything to their coasts they won’t need America’s market as much.
Nearly 80% of Canada’s exports went to the US less then 10 years ago. It’s near 60% today. At this rate, we could see 30-40% exports to the US in another 10 years.
Asia+Africa+South Asia+EU all want Canadian resources.
Canada has one of the largest concentrations of LNG/OIL/Potash/Timber/Water/Metals/Critical Minerals/Rare earths in the world.
And it’s not a war zone like the Middle east.
Canada can play the long game. And where it is on the world stage it can connect to the Asian markets on it’s west coast, and it can connect to Africa and EU on its east.
Canada has the same benefits land wise that the states has.

They’re going to yank us around with constant changes and threats.. just like liberation day.. just like the ceasefire agreements. Obvious market manipulation laced with mob boss negotiation tactics.
Just like Trump’s handshakes.. business deals.. just like his political allies like Pence, Bolton etc.
Trump gonna Trump.
This is all clear as day.
