> Tesla has begun testing a production version of its Cybercab that has two seats, but no steering wheel or pedals, in Austin, Texas. For now, the testing is being done with a safety monitor in the right passenger seat, according to a video posted on X, the social media platform owned by the electric car maker’s CEO Elon Musk.
> This test is happening nearly two years after Tesla revealed the design of the Cybercab, which is meant to be a fully autonomous robotaxi that can be hailed through Tesla’s app. Roughly a year ago, Tesla began testing a Tesla Robotaxi service in Austin with Model Y SUVs that have, at times, used safety monitors.
> Tesla has been testing prototype versions of the Cybercab, equipped with a steering wheel and pedals, in a number of cities around the United States in recent weeks. It has also been parking hundreds of the vehicles in parking lots in some of those cities, sparking speculation that the company was finally going to launch a truly scaled-up robotaxi network.
> One of the hurdles to realizing that idea is likely about to be removed. Last week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration revealed a proposal that would not mandate brake pedals in “vehicles designed to be driven exclusively by automated driving systems.” The proposal is still in the public comment period, but it is expected to go through later this year.

Aren’t there legal requirements for vehicles on the road? The amount of times I’ve seen waymo videos where a police officer is arguing with a waymo person to give them control because the car cant resolve to get out of a jam.

Didn’t I just read someone was charged with manslaughter when his Tesla crashed into a house using fsd?

Sony gets rid of physical discs for Playstation.
Tesla gets rid of physical controls for car.
This desperately needs someone clowning on both. Like Ford declaring they’ll be one-upping both and sell a virtual car. You will imagine yourself going places.

They’re in PHX too I’ve seen like 4-5 of them now driving around. They look fucking stoopid too ngl. It’s like a if some jackass painted chopped a clog in half, painted gold and gave it wheels. Also idk who’s the smart MF that thought these need to be a 2 seater only.

I live in downtown Austin and deal w/ these daily. They fucking suckkkkkk compared to Waymo’s. Getting behind a Waymo is fine, they start fast and then pace with the traffic (like going 45 mph in a 35 zone type shit). The teslas are brutal to be behind, worse than a city bus.
Oh and they are without a doubt the ugliest pieces of shit infesting our roads and in Texas thats saying a lot.

How is this possible if Reddit told me FSD is not FSD?
Are they remote controlling the cars?

This seems like a stupid marketing idea. From a financial perspective, the cost savings from not having a manual control option would be erased by one or two of the tows required when the software eventually fails.
I’m not even talking about the safety implications, because, reasonably, someone riding in the rear or passenger seats would be unable to make any meaningful intervention in the case of an emergency. This is why I think autonomous taxis are stupid in the first place. The supporting infrastructure isn’t there. You have to build roads with autonomous vehicles in mind to make them safe. Just like we build roads with „manual“ vehicles in mind today. And like how some vehicles aren’t allowed to travel on certain roads (too large and/or heavy).

I saw one of these in Los Angeles yesterday. It was too far away for me to see if there was a person inside.

I saw one of these in my neighborhood a few days ago. Very strange.

I rode in a Zoox in Vegas this April. Definitely a weird experience going through traffic with absolutely no way to control it. It was free so decided to take a ride around. Kinda fun though. You can choose music and it had a decent sound system.
