Around a third is normal I think. If it reaches half, I’d be concerned.

Tatemae is the bread and butter of that country so not a surprising thing to see

Lots of marriages are based on economic reasons; both parties probably have a lover already.

My bosses‘ wife is Japanese and tells me the same thing, that once you get married and have kids it’s over and your become a cash cow, wife stays at home and doesn’t work as per tradition. He is depressed and doesn’t want to go home

I believe that wherever you are in the world the number of great marriage is probably less than 20%.

The ones looking for a real connection, usually marry foreigners. I would say around 70-75 % are either shotgun or majime weddings.

Both are equally bad in their own rights.

I’d venture to say that me and my wife are closer to roommates than a married couple. Not for lack of want, but the longer I’m with this person, the more I realize that they don’t want love, they just don’t want to be alone.
So I can see that as being more common here than I’d want to believe.

I think a big problem is a lot of people in Japan wait so long to get married that they just “arrange” a marriage for lack of a better word as soon as possible once they encroach upon 30 or 35 years old to pop out 2 kids and give the bank account to the wife who will now control the money in an ever-increasingly tight budget with inflation giving the hubby 500 yennies for lunch at work and a dead bedroom for both of them.

It’s been said a lot of men and women in these arrangements also waited to get married because often the men are gay and the women are asexual and so that results in more of a co-parenting relationship than hot and steamy marital fun.
