I don’t watch telly myself.
My wife and kids like that foreigner man murder mystery show where Kitano wears a funny outfit and all of the little faces pretend to be shocked when the foreigner man woman lady axe murders her husband’s wife’s boyfriends dog’s vet’s mistress’s brother-in-law’s ex-boyfriend with a gun. Also, the two comedy dickheads get a surprise fire extinguisher to the bollocks, very mirth.
But it would be cool if they showed some juicy local murder mysteries though. It’s not as if there’s a shortage of brutal slayings here.

The TV is so vapid and brainscrewingly shit, that this is a good thing.
Most content is either an old guy eating in a restaurant with a women the third his age and comment abour the food or evening Enka show… TV is stuck in the showa era and they were no evolution.

Maybe if they got rid of the cast of useless „talents“ that ooh and ahh at everything, or offer empty commentary on stuff they know nothing about… maybe then shows would be less obnoxious.
I last watched Japanese tv seriously around 2015 when I was studying Japanese and wanted to increase listening input. I put the tv on a few weeks ago randomly and it was the exact same people doing the same shit, just with new 20 year old women.
It’s very low intelligence and riddled with advertisements.

My Japanese parents have completely switched over to streaming and YouTube premium over watching mundane tv shows about pets or food.
Good riddance. Japanese TV is so boring. Talentless tarento saying oishiiiii, TV crew interviewing a tourists outside the arrival gates and „wow! This Gaikokujin loves shu cream!!! Wow!“ Then there’s the cringe tv dramas. Hardly any movies. Yawn 🥱
Man maybe if they made TV bearable more people would watch. I literally only ever watch tv for the news or if my grandma is watching something and I have nothing else to do. Like I’m a fat ass for food but if I have to watch one of those „えええええええ~ or おいしいいいいい!1!1!1!~“ food programs one more time… I might lose a screw or 2.

Gave our netflix password to my in laws and they haven’t turned on terrestrial TV other than weather and earthquake news since.
To be honest I used to think the average person in Japan was fine with the absolute void or personality most Japanese TV has… But I just don’t get why it’s survived this long now.
Most television in Japan is stuck in the late 80s. The demographic that a majority of the context is made for is dying off.
Japanese tv shows are mostly watching youtube videos, eating food, or making celebrities do dumb shit. Of course viewership will go down- it’s shit quality.
Japanese TV show never changed at all. Same old content, people, entrainment and so on. That’s why young Japanese people are shifting their views on other streaming platforms such as TikTok and YouTube.
