      >The goal of the Russian provocation would be to escalate tensions and force Western allies to suspend aid to Ukraine. It could be launched in a matter of months.

To be clear, they want a provocation to blame Ukraine later, and if NATO fails to respond in kind, that would also spook the Polish people and therefore weaken NATO’s collective resolve in sending aid to Ukraine.

This seems to be a kind of desperate high risk, high reward plan, and will never be considered unless Russia is not making progress on the battlefield.

Finnish soldiers said it best: „They are so many, and we are so small, where will we find room to bury them all?“

      **Cui bono?**

For Russia (already having a hard time), dragging Poland, a country with a very strong military and a very important NATO member (our eastern buffer), into the war makes absolutely zero sense.

Ukraine, on the other hand, has been trying to drag NATO into the war for quite some time and has the most to gain were that to happen. For example, NATO planes protecting Ukrainian airspace against Russian missiles and drones would massively reduce the pressure on Ukrainian AD and reduce the damage caused to its industry.

      So …

    4. Seriously? Russia, which is already stretched very thin from the war in Ukraine, would risk attacking a NATO country for no reason other than to test NATO resolve? Are we really supposed to take this seriously?

I noticed that the article cites no US sources. The claim is being made by the Polish president and the supporting sources are Baltic (and an ambassador from an unnamed country to a Polish ally). These are hardly neutral sources.

That is not the only view …

„The idea of the Russian military being a threat to Europe is ridiculous. Russia can’t even get to Kyiv! A few years ago, **Russia had 4% of the world’s military spending and NATO had 40%**.“

    6. Russian ground-based attack or any Russian incursion on NATO soil is laughable but I can understand that the transatlantic alliance and the western media needs to nurture and keep this perceived Russian threat alive.

The European leaders wouldn’t want their commitment to rearm and fight a war with Russia to come under any sort of public scrutiny, they need the public to think that Russia plans to occupy Europe or something like that.

Russian strikes on military targets in Europe is however plausible, I suppose it depends on how far the alliance is willing to go in assisting Ukraine to strike Russia and inflict significant damage. If Russia starts to feel vulnerable and backed into a corner then who knows what Russia might do but it’s evident to me that Russia prefers to avoid any sort of NATO level of escalation.

Poland operates the third-largest military in NATO, trailing only the US and Turkey, and is the largest in the European Union. Even if NATO didn’t fulfil their defensive obligations, which I believe they would, forcing Poland into the war will only accelerate Russia’s defeat.

    8. How are you people so guillible?

Its not gonna be „boots on ground“ style of attacks but a drone here and there on Ukraine supply lines. Then pay off the KOLs to start stoking the „no more weapon factory on Polish soil“ rhetorics.

Western politicians are spineless thats why they are not gonna invoke article 5 right away giving Putin plenty of times to deescalate as needed.

It’s odd. Every news report tells us that the Kremlin is so short of soldiers that it can’t even hold the Ukrainians, hence the mass recruitment of African mercenaries and North Korean troops.

But now they’re supposedly going to attack Poland, which has a population comparable to Ukraine’s.

Looks like the British media are aiming for a pre‑ WWI Germany effect-  commit suicide before you’re killed.

Maybe Poland and Lithuania will take the initiative and attack the leftover bits of East Prussia to see if the Kremlin has any forces at all? And if they do, they can always ask for the full support of the British army- all 60,000 of them

It is just stupid propaganda in order to justify wasteful military spending.

    12. amapofthecat7 on

Of all the eastern european countries in NATO, attacking Poland would be an extremely dumb idea.

Nah I’d call this very poor journalism.

I still don’t get how we can depict Russia as any threat for the west after this debacle.

      Just click/rage bait.

    14. So let me get this straight: Russia can’t even subjugate a much smaller country that theoretically shall have fallen in two weeks after four years and is actually pounding them at an alarming and escalating rate and the best strategic move they think of is attacking the third biggest NATO army.
I mean is like logic and self preservation has been thrown out the window Putin style.
This is not a calculated threat for diplomatic gain. This is plainly stupid or false information.

    15. aD_rektothepast on

Of all the NATO countries for Russia to attack, I don’t think Poland is the smartest choice.

    16. Test NATO? Only thing would be strategic nukes which France and Britain possess as well as the US. Trying to attack Poland would be suicide in the state the Russians are in.
