      These are extremists straight out of the middle ages. They don’t believe in freedom of religion and secularism and believe that the state should ban „fake religions“ that aren’t Christianity.

      The irony of SSPX is that they are very big on traditional hierarchy, except when they find themselves in a position where they need to submit to the Vatican. Then suddenly they don’t like it. They only care about „tradition“ and „hierarchy“ when it gives them a motive to act as if they are holier and superior to other people they look down upon.

      Unfortunately a lot of American Catholics have this attitude, which I find goes very much against the whole spirit of Catholicism.

      I’m not Catholic but it seems impossible for the excommunication to be remotely controversial. Consecrating bishops without approval of the pope breaks the entire hierarchy of the church and cannot be accepted. There is obviously no choice but to excommunicate them. Their traditionalist beliefs are irrelevant for this.

      That’s an oxymoron: a real ultraconservative bishop would rather die than contradict the Vatican. Criticizing the pope, Catican or Catholic church as a whole means you’re a reformist that attempts to break with the most important traditions of Catholicism.

      If you wanted to criticize the head of your religion, you shouldn’t have become a Catholic.

      Not only the bishops. They excommunicated all thier members including the 750 priests, 250 or so seminarians and their religious brothers and sisters. And they warned the lay people that if they will keep attending their services, they will be excommunicated as well.

      There is no god, so this is all pointless.

      Fuck the church. They promote abstinence to some of the poorest people on the planet, and advocate against contraception. They take up collections in churches where people don’t have enough to eat, they are one of the wealthiest institutions out there.

      Not even touching the rife misogyny – women can’t be priests and gay people can’t be married or go to heaven. Little girls have to marry Jesus. Fuck the fucking church in all its forms.

      There is no excuse for this defiance by the SSPX. The group itself is a sacrilege. Within Catholicism, to question the Pope’s decisions is to question Jesus. So basically the SSPX is arguing with God.

      Why would anyone follow that except to satisfy their own bigotry and beliefs.

      I didn’t know this group before today and I wish I could go back to not knowing it. These people are among those who give us Catholics (or Christians in general) a bad rep, and I’m not just talking about the clear defiance, but their own ideology is so elitist and antiquated to say the least. I’m glad for this firm response by the Church.
