U.S. researchers say they have built a cell from scratch for the first time. Built with lab-made DNA, it can feed, grow, and multiply.

    1. The important thing to note is that it can’t do zilch by itself (at least according to the article I read, which is NOT the linked one). Even to divide, it needs to be fed ribosomes from the outside. So no danger of anything happening yet. Second, even the creators say it’s super inefficient, basically a tech demo

A suuper looong way from this to an animal or a species

Oh thank God, the last few years have really been boring, maybe this will lead to something interesting.

Just wondering if this is the inception of the Umbrella corporation, or GeneCo. Either way, it’s not good.

    4. One thing I’ve learned in the last 5 years is that, contrary to the hopes we had for most of the modern age, new inventions will always be used to make our lives worse and any improvements in our living conditions because of them are just coincidences. That being said, I’m dreading whatever sort of nightmare they’re going to unleash with this.

The ethical concerns of this are exactly like cloning, so it’s nothing or there’s already a secret army of lab grown people among us. Whatever. There’s worse shit on the news.

However, with the way things are going, nothing would suprise me. Half the country elected a god damn obvious idiot that’s been an obvious idiot for 50 years.

If Scientists and the public could keep clone armies from spawing out of holes in the ground, it may have been because a clone has a natural identity, a „prime“ that is a real person or animal with a mom and a cute face and love and all that warm fuzzy stuff. That’s just too much bull shit for any evil tech lord to want to deal with and they made it illegal to clone yourself and it would be pretty obvious to figure out the source.

Now though, now the tech lords have created the „prime“ before there was a law to prevent it and now we’re getting Cylons. Mother fucking Cylons.

Like so much of synthetic biology, this is just biological Rube-Goldberg machine.

While it’s very impressive, it’s just using repurposed and modified versions of existing biology to ‚create‘ a life-form.

In a sense, it’s like taking parts from multiple computers to build a different computer… but rather than using screws wires, and cables, this computer uses genes and gene products.

It’s only ’synthetic‘ for certain philosophical reasons.

Practically it is a derivative of existing life.
