    1. Multiculturalism is absolutely a plus, and something we should be proud of!

    2. This is heartening, at least. Multiculturalism is probably our most important cultural value.

Being welcoming of immigrants and recognizing that we only have so much capacity for immigration are not mutually exclusive.

I don’t think its that complicated of an idea.

I live in St. John’s and our farmers market had a shawarma stand run by a Syrian refugee next to a Jewish deli, and i think that’s a beautiful thing. I think Carney recently said it well – bring your faith, bring your food, bring your art, bring your celebrations, but leave behind your quarrels.

It’s a plus to any nation, unlike the exclusionary rhetoric that has become so widespread in the past 20-odd years among our nationalists. That, we could well do without.

Canada is a very interesting and largely successful experiment in high and constantly evolving cultural and ethnic diversity under a single political framework. It probably helps that we can be relatively selective when it comes to who we let in. Many of the proudest Canadians I know are first generation immigrants – they understand how lucky we are here.

The word is a masterclass in political doublespeak.

Trudeau the Elder intended multiculturalism as an integration policy. As in, they decided it would be easier / more effective to get 1st-gen migrants to adopt one of two languages and a common set of civic beliefs / values, and let people retain the things they do like cultural events, clothing etc. Integration of second generation happens by default in the school system (I.e. for all the talk, second gen and on is actually a melting pot).

    8. Born and raised in Toronto. Growing up, I’ve always had a diverse group of friends. Going over their places as kids exposed me to different cultures from an early age, which includes their foods.

As an adult, I still had a diverse group of friends, and even though we aren’t Chinese, we could go out for authentic Chinese dishes because Toronto is a hub for this. We could enjoy a Jamaican beef patty as a snack on a coco bread with a ting. We could get a bubble tea from one of the many shops in the city that there’s no shortage of. Hell, even in Ottawa, the shawarma is top notch.

Whenever the topic of multiculturalism criticism comes up, they only ever talk about the negatives and never the positives. They need to be exposed more to the positives. Food is always one of the best parts, because food is meant to be shared.

    9. I like it as long as people adopt Canadian values and language. I don’t think insular communities benefit Canada

We are one of the few nations that are on a path to being a legitimate multi cultural democracy. We just need to be careful to not allow foreign agitators to stoke nationalist blowback, and, be judicious in continuing to bring in many voices and many cultures so there is not a fight for hegemony by any one.

one year we got a good cold snap in the Lower Mainland, and the wife and I got our skiis and went on a little skid through Green Timbers Park in Surrey. There were a bunch of kids in turbans playing pond hockey.

This memory has always sat fondly with me.

    12. I don’t think it is, and most Canadians probably agree if we take away the marketing. Canada doesn’t practice multiculturalism, it practices cultural pluralism. Multiculturalism is the idea that all cultures should be able to enact their cultural practices, regardless of whether or not you personally agree with it, the idea that all cultures are equal, that obviously isn’t the case here in Canada. We treat different cultural practices with different levels of acceptance, from completely accepting, to outright prohibition under criminal penalty, not very multicultural of us.

    13. Real multiculturalism isnt a good thing. We see multiracialism or an abundance of dining options and conclude its multicultural or diverse when its mainly just a superficial window dressing. You can eat at a foreign restaurant and get a sprinkle of what the culture may be like, but you arent jumping in with both feet. Real diverse multiculturalism would mean opposing cultures thst would be in conflict over their opposing views. LGBTQ culture doesnt mesh with certain cultures for example, and I wont say which because that would be inflammatory, but you get the idea. What is needed is people from around the world that may have subcultures, but they are in line with the main culture of the country
