>Overall, 11.8 million **unique Canadian viewers** tuned in for some part of the match, which saw audiences peak with 8.2 million viewers at 4:53 p.m. ET as Canada midfielder Stephen Eustáquio scored the unforgettable goal to secure the win.
And the Canada vs South Africa match was the only match played on Sunday, there was no other World Cup match to compete against for viewing numbers that day.
The Stanley Cup finals drew 4.5 million viewers which is absolutely pathetic. The Stanley Cup finals drew 15+ million viewers in 2004. Soccer is already bigger among certain communities like Italians in Vaughan. And now Rogers wants you to pay to watch hockey, hockey is as good as dead.

Saturday’s game will be bonkers. Weekend, early afternoon ET / late morning out West, hot weather. I think its more advantageous timing than the evening – should be a great show.

Hopefully this type of attention will help ensure we’re competitive in soccer going forward. Obviously we’re pretty far back from the top countries still but there’s no reason why we can’t be equivalent to the 2nd tier Europeans countries

I do believe that this is a one time thing because of the World Cup. Even though Hockey viewership is down because of Rogers, it will still be larger than Soccer because it is so ingrained in our culture. Soccer is growing a lot of Canada because of factors like this.

Still crazy the number of people who don’t know the world cup is going on. Best sport in the world. Hope it can be the boost needed in this country

I am one of assuming many millions of those that have become an overnight short term soccer fan. Genuinely enjoying watching the boys get after it.

I’d love for all this excitement to bring more investment into the Canadian Premier League. We can do more to support domestic sports leagues and give our talent a place to grow at home.

I wonder how they come up with the numbers. I was at a watch party with 4000 people watching a single feed. Surely they must account for this kind of group watching?

Just a reminder that this just Canadian viewers. In 2022, a World Cup match had an average of 175 million viewers globally per match: https://inside.fifa.com/tournament-organisation/audience-reports/qatar-2022
And the Canada vs South Africa match was the only match played on Sunday, there was no other World Cup match to compete against for viewing numbers that day.
For comparison to the global viewership of other major sporting events, [the global viewership numbers for the Super Bowl in 2024 was 62.5 million viewers](https://www.nfl.com/news/global-audience-of-62-5-million-watched-super-bowl-lviii-an-increase-of-10-percent-over-2023).
Soccer is bigger than hockey in Canada now
This is a fact
