Well they got us to slash Chinese auto tarrifs last time with similar tariffs. Maybe they want us to increase the amount of cars they’re allowed to export to Canada to drop this tariff?

So according to r/Canada, the next logical steps is to further increase the amount of Chinese vehicles we allow into Canada by 73.5%.
You know, seeing as most people on this sub think China is our lord and savior and that we should run to them when we have disagreements with the USA.
Curious actual question: How often did these kinds of super-specific product-targeted tariffs occur before the tariff keyword started trending?

Is this because that political dissident arrived in Canada?

> China said on Tuesday it will impose a 73.5 per cent preliminary tariff on imports of Canadian pea starch from July 1, as part of temporary anti-dumping measures after a more than 10-month investigation.
>
> The Ministry of Commerce said its investigation had found that Canadian pea starch was being “dumped” in China, causing “material injury to the domestic industry.”
What does dumping mean in this case? Like literally dumping it in China like it’s waste or is it more like flooding the markets?

No tarffis are great I live with tarffis made for economic reasons by experts in government that can be negotiated with that only effect one tiny industry
Sweeping traffis that are created on the whim of a demented old man that change daily based on his mood are a bigger problem

But I thought China was supposed to be a „reliable“ alternative to the volatile US that keeps imposing arbitrary tariffs?
This is why I’ve been saying that China is a terrible choice to turn to. They have been using tariffs as a political tool just as long as the US.

Paul Krugman, the Nobel Prize winning economist who historically supported free trade now supports tariffs on Chinese EVs: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/videos/2026-06-27/why-krugman-thinks-we-need-chinese-auto-tariffs-video
