How many e scooter fatalities are we up to now? It feels like every few months there’s another tragic story. At some point we need to have a serious conversation about enforcement, helmets, and people treating them like the vehicles they are instead of toys.

Literally yesterday I had to dodge a little shit driving the wrong way on an escooter, they really need to do something about safety in general for them, no idea what went on here but it is crazy out there

A scooter with a passenger and by the sounds of things no helmet. Carlow is a big town surely the rules can be enforced.

Smaller towns in Ireland got kids aged 8 riding them, up on the paths. No guards so no enforcement and parents don’t give a ***“. Little lad next door got one for his communion !

Soooo, how are these kids getting access to these things? Are parents happy to buy them and let little Johnny work away on his own without any real supervision or training?

Edit: Iv just googled them, and these death traps are shockingly affordable to buy. So much so that I would definitely be questioning the safety of them.

Theres a trend in my area that they wear head to toe black clothing, including a black facemask and black beanie. I think kids like that think they are invincible, which is really sad when you see a headline like that.

Crossing the road last night at a pedestrian crossing where the lights were red for drivers, three young fellas on e-scooters shot straight through the red lights. No regard for the safety of others. It’s absolutely crazy.

A reminder to anyone on these – only ride a *legal* machine, with a CE mark, bought from a legitimate EU based seller with a well known brand name. Keep it well serviced, especially the brakes and the lights. If the built-in lights on your scooter have failed or are going dim, or simply aren’t good enough, either get them replaced or put the lights on yourself. Red ones at the back, white ones at the front. If you need a light to see rather than be seen – then get a high lumen light mounted to the handlebars.

Not a legal requirement but for the love of god wear a decent bicycle helmet; a nice one with MIPS safety features will set you back about €40 from Decathlon but could save your life. A fall (which is easy with tiny wheels that can hit rocks or potholes) at 20 km/h is no joke.

A reminder to drivers – always be wary of vulnerable road users. Look out for scooters and have some patience so we’ll all get home in one piece.

A reminder to Gardaí – enforce these laws! Don’t be afraid to take non-compliant scooters off people and to take them off children.

I didn’t think these would take off (I thought they’d go the way of heelies and electric skateboards), but people are using them as a way to get around and they’re here to stay, but a bit of cop on from the users and a bit of enforcement from the guards and we might be able to save a dozen lives a year, because that’s what we stand to lose.
