      Never met and same team is the same color? You title makes it sound like you are trying to emphasize the never met aspect. Why black?

      Why is this showing double the data? This full square table only makes sense if you include the quite arbitrary home-away designators. This table should just be a triangle section.

      Well Croatia and Portugal have never met at the World Cup but they did play each other many times.

      Sorting by number of matchups and then recency might make the data flow better allowing you to see who has played the most countries and how recently which is what I think you are trying to convey. The geography isn’t as important.
