Very unfortunate. Surely they can get a chargeback?
They live in jersey , £5K is nothing. You have to be a millionaire to live there.
This feels like something that should be able to be taken to small claims court. That’s ridiculous.
Insurer would had been better off applying some discretion/common sense and making them whole for the negative PR they are inviting (on the Airline) by dragging it out with the family as the damage to reputation will exceed the 5 grand
If the travel insurance doesn’t cover this then it sounds like small claims against the airline. If the travel insurance did cover this but are refusing the claim then fuck them
Hello passengers, we will shortly be landing at.. uhh.. uh. uhh?
From the thumbnail I thought 1970s Barbara Streisand had been fucked over by an airline
Hold up, what’s the point in travel insurance if it doesn’t cover you doing nothing wrong, being present with all valid documents and the airline fucking up?
In all other insurance cases they would pay out for the event and then try to get some of their losses back with the airline.
wtf.
How does something like this happen in 2026? Seriously, so much for being in the „information age“.
I’m from Jersey with a Jersey-issued passport and I’ve been to China multiple times and also seperately flown China Eastern and never encountered any problems. Although this was prior to the visa free policy and I had a Chinese visa.
„We have received confirmation from the Chinese authorities that British Citizens holding Jersey-issued passports are eligible for visa-free travel to China under the same conditions as those holding UK-issued passports.“
The Ministry say they are working with the UK Foreign Office and the Chinese Embassy in London to „ensure that the correct information is passed to airlines“.
Quite a regrettable incident. Clearly the airline staff were ignorant of the actual rules.
Have you heard of New Jersey? Yeah, its the old one.
I got stuck behind someone from Jersey at an Italian airport once. Took about 30 minutes for him to convince them that his Jersey passport was real, and Jersey wasn’t part of the UK ( this was during the Covid travel restrictions and he hadn’t completed a UK passenger locator form because he was catching a connecting flight into Jersey ).
Most Brits do not understand the relationship between Jersey and the UK let along some underpaid clerk from a Chinese airline
When your passport of convenience isn’t very convenient. Maybe we should stop allowing crown dependencies to issue British passports, given that they are not the British government.
Ah, I’ve heard this happen to people from New Zealand on occasion
My Jersey passport once caused a lot of confusion at Newark airport…
The fact that this happened IN GATWICK and not abroad is just even more baffling
