(But yeah, there’s a huge swathe of public services that need to have the profit motive removed from the equation)

Maybe just limit the amount of profit margin they can make to like 4% or something – banning all profit will just cause most of these places to shut down without a replacement.

Why stop at half measures? Let’s just ban private companies from making profit, period, and watch the economy collapse

Usual shouting at clouds nonsense.
Do the care staff make more money than they spend on a shift? Profit.
Do the admin staff make more money than they spend on a shift? Profit.
Do the food suppliers make money?
Do the materials suppliers make money?
etc. etc.
As long as there’s room for profit and grift it’ll happen. If a government is paying for something it should be running it, and be responsible. I don’t mean in the sense that 60 years later they’ll apologise for the horrific conditions on their grandparents‘ watch, but day-to-day. Any tinkering around the edge will just lead to slightly different grifting.

Then there will be no incentive for companies to do it, meaning it’ll fall on charities, then ultimately the NHS.
It needs to be brought back in-house. That way you’re covering the workers salaries and not shareholder dividends.

Bit late for that, 4 out of every 5 providers social care use is private
Not just care homes for the elderly, but children homes, domiciliary care, etc
Not that I disagree, it should never had been aloud to happen but its in the long grass

I would prefer to see a clampdown on unscrupulous companies. I’ve worked for plenty of private care agencies who genuinely want the best for staff and clients and the owners oversee the operations personally.
Equally, I’ve worked for a company where the owner charged £20 an hour to care homes for cover staff, payed us £8.60 an hour, didn’t declare our pay to hmrc and stole our tax and NI.

Meanwhile a reform councillor in my local authority is the director and co-owner of a private care company. He tabled a motion to close 5 public /council run care homes in the area. I wonder why 🤔
Absolute spunk guzzler he is.

How exactly is anyone proposing this with a straight face? „Your company must only make enough money to operate?“. That’s going to go down so well.

My Grandma uses Helping Hands, they’re a premium care provider. They honestly cost an arm and a leg. It’s about £1000 a week for three visits a day. Morning, lunch and dinner/evening.
We had used several low cost providers, some recommended by the local council. They ended up all being terrible, causing problems like missing meditation. Being caught leaving early. Not keeping my Grandma washed and dressed properly. Leaving the house a mess etc.

Remember when Reform councils tried to sell off carehomes to private providers? Lol
Making thing non-profit does not make them more efficient.

Ban parking companies from hospital car parks. Nobody goes to a hospital for fun. Fattening a shareholder or private company owner shouldn’t come at the expense of the sick and their loved ones.

So eliminate any contract service providers. Will be interesting to see how everyone feels about it when they can’t get the services.

Just a reminder to people that non-profits still make money for the people that work for them. Remember that companies, no matter what Americans say, are not actually thinking entities in themselves.
All Dutch private healthcare providers are non-profits.

My mate Dave has a nice little thing going with several local care homes – he cuts their grass and does occasional groundwork. He has an annual contract.
Does Burnham’s no profit policy apply to Dave.

My partner works in the private care sector. They’re plugged into every level of daily care across the entire UK. I don’t think people really understand how much of the load has been quietly shifted into the private sector in the past decade. Its not just cowboy care homes. Its the literal plumbing of social care that’s been moved across. Primary and secondary care staff, medication, legal, logistics, the works.
The problem isn’t just greedy execs. Its that adult care is rapidly becoming the biggest cost to the[ local councils](https://www.kingsfund.org.uk/insight-and-analysis/press-releases/councils–costs-social-care-report) and the NHS. And the solution following this logic is to not just return it into the NHS, but grow it at a speed that will cost an amout people categorically are not prepared to pay.

People think the triple lock is bad. That’s peanuts compared to dealing with a population who are living way longer, but with [declining amounts of that time healthily](https://www.health.org.uk/reports-and-analysis/analysis/healthy-life-expectancy-trends-in-the-uk-a-watershed-moment). Dicking about with private sector profits is „arranging deckchairs on the Titanic“ levels of not addressing the issue.
Who is going to spend their time and risk their own money to run a business not allowed to make profit?
Who here wants to make their own business, with all the legal risks involved, work crazy hours, and get nothing?
To be fair, I think Ian McKellen can afford his own care costs.
High outcomes should be the answer. If you can do this for more profit then others then fair play.
In my area most domiciliary care companies end up having council payments not being paid. My last company was owed £250,000 by the local council.
Everyone I know think he should ban private companies from making a profit ful stop.
Ban private companies even…
Fuck it… Ban being private!
Privacy should be banned!
