It is outstanding, but at this point not surprising, that it is this so far behind in Dublin and now nothing for the rest of the country until after 2028.. something poorer countries than ours have implemented without issue years ago. Inept at every level.
I always feel second hand embarrassment when tourists try to get a bus from the airport and don’t have a leap card and have to saunter back to the shop inside to get one because they can’t pay by card.
Public transport is unreliable for the most part but this is such an abject failure.
Why not just give the leap app the functionality of the leap card? You put money in and tap the phone to pay. It’s contactless payment with extra steps but at least it’d be a quick easy fix nationwide
So frustrating.
But also does anyone know why the second leap card readers have been added to all buses in Cork for months now, but have been covered up.
The system already works on buses in Dublin, why is it taking so long to put them into use in Cork? It would save so much time at busy times.
This is so embarrassing as a country to be this far behind something that is standard in many other countries. UK in 2012 for instance, by the time its introduced here we will be at least 16 years behind the UK!

I moved rural many years back. Was up in Dublin for Metallica and it’s actually embarrassing that Dublin bus is either leap card or cash only. I couldn’t believe it. Similar with the train. Had to queue for a paper ticket.
Over 20 years ago in Japan, the tourist card would just be tag on tag off at stations and it would charge you the cheapest fair for where you started and ended up. It was hassle free.

Was in Dublin for the first time in years. Made no sense to me to queue up to buy a ticket. Meanwhile contactless payments exist across Europe. It’s like we’re determined to stay in the struggle vs convenience
It’s things like this that illustrate just how bad things are, with little to no joint up thinking and piss poor standards in state bodies
just let us put the leap card on our google /apple wallets i went to fucking morocco and they let us put our travel cards on our ohone
I can tap to pay for my kids to ride on one of them kiddie rides in a supermarket but not on the adult version.
Cannot wait for this to be defended as usual.

When I visited Lithuania they literally just had a a few sum-up machines stuck onto the walls of the bus and the bus driver had one too – and they worked perfectly

Regularly take the 100x bus from Dundalk to Dublin airport. It’s shocking how much time is lost in buying tickets when passengers board along the route.
Public transport system is so simple.
Before a bus arrives at a bus stop, people can start tapping their NFC enabled devices like debit/credit cards, smartphones, smart watch, bus cards, etc.
Bus arrives at a bus stop and only the REAR EXIT door opens allowing exiting passengers to disembark. REAR EXIT door closes.
FRONT ENTRY door opens and people start tapping their NFC enabled devices at the terminal beside the bus driver. The bus driver can hear and see if everyone taps in else remind them to try again. Driver can also transact cash payments and issue bus tickets.
Tapping in and out determines distance travelled and can be charged accordingly at end of day or end of week. This data is critical for a lot of things related to transportation but this reply is already too long and i doubt anyone cares.
I don’t see the rush. What has rural Ireland done to deserve it anyway ?

2028 is wild, by then whatever contactless tech they finally roll out will already be ancient. The minister giving us this news probably taps his phone for a coffee without thinking twice, but expects the rest of us to dig for coins like it’s 1987. Embarrassing doesn’t cover it.
We have contactless payment on certain route in cork already, surely it’s an easier enough change over
