It’s not like we do that regularly, we just happen to have this one viking thing that went viral. As far as I know anyway.
Viking culture?
Basically marketing. Viking culture is almost irrelevant today in 2026 so Sweden focuses more on what reflects current daily Sweden

There is no viking culture
There’s No such thing as „Viking culture“.
If you’re born in America. You’re American. Dont run around claiming you’re this or that. You’re not.
Just depends on who is doing the PR any given year. Iceland had their whole Viking thunder clap thing going from 2016 into the 2018 World cup. Norway doesn’t pick a Viking theme every year. It’s just one of many options.
Denmark did not quality this year so you don’t see a lot from the at the World Cup and and the Sweden team have taken a low profile no-nonsense approach this year.
Also Norwegian fans are going a bit extra crazy because it’s 28 years since we last even qualified.
Because Sweden and Denmark like to portray themselves as modern high tech nations whereas Norwegians are much more in touch with their history.
We see this in other things such as wearing national dress which is popular in Norway and seen as quaint in Sweden and Denmark, or the embrace of the outdoors and rural life in Norway while Swedes and Danes think of themselves as being much more urbanized.
As someone whos Swedish, lived in norway for 10 years and then moved to U S. Norwegian takes that culture much more seriously then swedes for example.
For starters, Denmark didn’t even classify and Sweden already has overproduced pop music as their main cultural export.
Because the other countries have a longer and prouder modern history. After the “Viking age” Norway was in an uneven “union” with Denmark for hundreds of years, meaning we were ruled by the danish king. Then we were ruled by the Swedish king for almost 100 years. Sweden and Denmark were proud and fairly strong European nations during all this time. We were farmers and fishermen until the 1960s.
When we look back at history to find something to be proud of we have to go all the way back to the vikings. That’s why we use it so much. They were badass though! (And mostly danish….)

This is all brilliant marketing to the rest of the world if nothing else. It has caused many debates within Norway which I find tiresome. To those people I say let’s just embrace it! We have a silly gimmick that the world loves, it’s not white supremacy or neonazism. To those people I say calm the heck down and enjoy the World Cup!

Just happened to be hanging out with some Danes and Swedes this weekend who brought this up, and find it annoying.
This thing isn’t actually from our Viking heritage… it’s just a coincidence. It’s from when people chant Ro-sen-borg (Rosenborg is a football-team from Trondheim). And RO is “row” in Norwegian.
A lot of countries do so, but the medievalist depiction is not a continuation of a real cultural phenomenon or lifestyle. The viking age ended with the christening and decentralisation of offensive culture after 1066. Realistically one would need like sapmi attire to find real
, ancient cultural ancestry.
Many other countries do these sort of warrior-like dances for sport events, particularly thinking of places in the Americas and Pacific Ocean states.
It’s just a damn cool, but slightly corny dance. Just national anthems and any football team chant/song is expected of almost every country.
Certain Norwegian journalists disliked the branding, as it has slight connotations to events of political extremism, but the cathartic moment has passed for most of the discussion. The phenomenon of people wearing Viking helmets at soccer games is already a thing in many local football leagues.
As a Dane. Whenever there’s a match on, Denmark-Norway, I ask the question:
Against whom?

Sweden were great power long after the viking age… So viking age not their peak like as for the norwegians. In the 1600s and 1700s they were on the levels with the other great powers of europe.
Idk the swedish hockey association has had a viking ship as their logo for ages. And Iceland did this before Norway did.

While vikings certainly rowed they werentt the only ones. „Rowing“ is about maritime history in general, our dependence on the sea. Its so much deeper and relevant to who we still are then just a reference to vikings being badasses 1000 years ago.
When I visited Los Angeles a couple of years ago, a random security guard at LAX asked me where I was from, I answered Norway. He went on a long „omg omg a real Viking“ tirade.
I’m of Moroccan ethnicity and the only thing that could pass as „Viking“ when it comes to me is my long hair 🥲
So yeah it’s not just Norwegians who associate the country with Vikings, other countries associate Norway with Vikings a hell of a lot too.
To this day we say the viking age was Norway’s „greatest era“.

It is not so much about Norway having a bigger tradidion for vikingcultur vs the other scandinavian countries. This is 100% about this being the first time in 28 years that we qualified to play in the group stage in the world cup. We are therfore hyping it so hard, with merch, the Rowing thing and people who never cared about footbal needing some hours of on a Tuesday morning, because they were up til 4 in the morning to watch it live.
It is just like when Icelands qualified for the first time to the european championship in 2018, and had their shout. A shout I belive inspired the viking row.
Sweeden play the chamiponship regularly, and Denmark qualify regulary but not this year. It is just not the same hype from their nations on them partisapating.

im getting so tired of this „viking culture“ bs. the vast majority of norwegians do not care much about the vikings, its a part of our history but nothing rly more about that. norway uses it to attract tourism, which i imagien can help put money into the archeology and museums side. thats prety much it, americans r so desperate for culture they have to larp onto other countries for it when they have nothing to do with scandinavia apart from very distant relatives hundreds of years ago.
