      Sounds great, overdue.
      At least per summary missing how to deal with kids exposure to adult use, and allocating more funds to actually support the health focused approach.

      This committee was established to respond to the citizens‘ assembly on drug use. I wasn’t too impressed with the way they handled the final vote for that assembly but this report seems more in line with the views expressed before the vote

      I wouldn’t expect much to be done by the current Dáil. It sets something up for the next Dáil to do something about it though, if we get something other than FF/FG

      The Dáil passed a non-binding Labour Party motion supporting decriminalisation for personal drug use in 2022

      The Citizens Assembly recommended decriminalisation for personal drug use in 2024 by a large majority

      Now we’ve a report from the committee set up by the government after the citizens assembly saying to do the same thing the Dail said it would do in 2022, and what the people told them to do in 2024.

      3 and a half years of reflecting on the obvious, and it’s in all likelihood the government will avoid listening to the latest recommendation, finding another way to kick the can down the road.

      They talked about doing this well over 10 years ago for all drugs. It was proposed and I even saw it in British newspapers talking about how Britain should take a leaf out of Irelands book, but it never happened in the end

      I can’t see this happening. The wider public do not seem to want a rational solution to this problem.

      People don’t understand the difference between decriminalizing and legalizing and therefore the proposal will come across as being soft on drugs.

      FG would not support this.

      Worth noting that FF had decriminalisation for personal use in their manifesto and FG (or more specifically Simon Harris) came out against it. This was after the citizens assembly report, and the cross party Oireachtas committee.

      Doubt they would’ve followed through on it even if FG didn’t oppose but notable all the same.

      Most of the reasoning seems to he „short jail sentences doesn’t help people“, how about longer jail sentences and if people don’t want to help themselves and not take drugs then thats their problem. Have like a tiered system, 5 years for cannibis, 10 for cocaine, 30 for heroin, etc. Double any sentence for dealing.

      -And lower level , majors for our major cities

      Put pressure mechanism to have active decision making in this bodies. Deligating , disseminating, Getting the stamps and constant consulting , death of democracy when the public have made up their opinion but the politicians linger everything in meetings

      The last committee meetings were all decriminalization based and the arguments were very strong for it too.

      Whilst there was other establishmentments advocating for the status quo and more money been given to them to solve the issue which was ridiculous.

      I’m hopeful on this.

      Just don’t listen to anyone from the crainn sub reddit on this. Every time I go there its just pure negativity.

      I for one think a „Joint“ Committee will have a bias in favor of drugs.

      Can’t we have a regular committee back decriminalization.

      I’ve grown pessimistic about seeing this in the short to medium term tbh, the demographic shift among the electorate is possibly another generation away. Drug use is absolutely normalised and de-stigmatised among the vast majority of millennials and younger, and some Xers, but the generations preceding this still have a very very firm „drugs are bad, mmkay?“ attitude which is exceptionally difficult to shift, thanks partly to the war on drugs propaganda they were raised on, and partly because many of them were alive when opiates in particular swept through Ireland in the 1980s and 90s and decimated entire areas.

      That’s not to say it won’t happen, but unfortunately I feel like it’s another decade or two away. I’d love to be pleasantly surprised. I reckon there needs to be a fairly substantial demographic shift in terms of who votes.

      Social Democrats making a few moves I don’t hate recently. I know they will eventually disappoint me but I need an alternative for fg and ff. And the greens have already disappointed me.

      Who here doesn’t use drugs because they are illegal? Junkies get their fix if it’s illegal or not, weed or heroin.

      You guys don’t care if it’s illegal or not, same as all these dodgy box and streaming services you openly claim to use because it suits you to break the law. Yeah, you’re pirates, good for you!

      Place goes into uproar if someone you don’t like does something you’d definitely do if gotten the chance. This sub is full of hypocrites

      If we could do like in Portugal, we would see less people taking it in the steeet
      I’m cycling by the Liffey when coming back from work, and it’s quite sad that we just let the people smoking crac right in the street next to people waiting for the bus or children’s
      Or seeing the drug deal on oconel bridge, and I don’t mean weed
      It’s not even discret. Yet the Garda just prefer to look elsewhere

      Such a massive change in how our society works should be a referendum.
      It would be a massive shift in society and would send us on a different trajectory. The people should vote on it.

      I’m all for it ideally but we still need to do something about the crackheads smoking away in broad daylight on the quays. There’s a practical element here too.

      Only if they name their supplier and testify against them.

      It’s the suppliers and importers that we need to arrest.

      Otherwise make it legal to sell and regulate it. Takes money from criminal gangs and generates revenue whilst reducing overdoses.
