No sympathy for the Orbanites but is changing the constitution and getting rid of the courts the moment you start a new government is perhaps a bit borderline

      Tl,dr:

      – PM 8 year limit (2 terms)

      – MP 12 year limit (3 terms)

      – constitutional judge: 70 age limit

      – bunch of new brakes and balances inside the judiciary between the constitutional court and highest court (kúria)

      – ousting the president (mostly ceremonial role)

    3. Whatever they have done will only stick for good as soon as they minimize the possibility of a repeated 2/3 majority. This requires a new electoral system.

We can only lean back as soon as a new constitution is in place AND the first elections are through according to the new system.

Who knows how this will end up. Orban didn’t spend decades building his voting base for nothing, and a backlash will 100% happen eventually.

Nevertheless, it’s funny how Hungary used to be a role model for all the neo-fascists in the West. And now it might become an even bigger role model for all the anti-fascists.

If and when somebody comes to power in the US after Trump, a complete overhaul of the political system will be necessary, including the systematic dismantling of MAGA, insurrectionists, ICE, Fox, the Heritage Foundation, DOGE, et cetera.

So Magyar’s pulling a De Gaulle in a sense. The General proposed the Constitution of 1958 and ousted President Rene Coty, whose term was to expire much later.

    6. Great cleaning is needed and quickly. But I hope they will not place any mines into constitution.

Magyar seems to have learned from Tusk’s mistakes – when you oust an entrenched regime from power, you need to fast-track purge its appointees and holds to power from everywhere, otherwise they will obstruct you, block you and turn popular sentiment against you for „not doing anything“.

It’s mind-blowing how everyone here just assumes good intentions from a guy who was raised in FIDESZ, completely dismissing any criticism or concerns that Magyar could end up becoming Orban 2.0.

    9. They should fix the constitution and the election system so it is not a winner takes all system and then make it harder to change the constitution, otherwise the next orban will undo everything easily

Hopefully the new constitution will also include limits on rewriting the constitution. If the constitution can be rewritten at will by any PM, its’s only a matter of time before democracy gets dismantled again.
