I’ve finally caved and got a portable air conditioner. It never used to be necessary but if it’s going to get into the 30s and almost into the 40s in summer moving forward it’s a non negotiable.

As fast as I can see the Met Office aren’t telling people to ’stay indoors‘, they’re saying ’stay in the shade‘ and ‚try not to exercise when its really hot‘ as well as ‚don’t drown‘.
It’s all very sensible.

Stay indoors? It’s hotter in my house than it is outside…

I’ve bought air to air heat pumps.
So air con in the summer. Heat in the winter.
I’ve switched it on.
It’s cost a small fortune but worth it.

While this may seem awful and exceptionally dangerous, with large swaths of the nation having their nature destroyed, just remind yourself of how this puts additional billions in the hands of the 6 guys who already have more billions than they could spend in a thousand lifetimes.
Vote for Nige! We might be able to push it up to 45 in a few years!

Unfortunately, many of us have to work without air conditioning.

For those who can’t afford or can’t install air conditioning I’ve recently purchased what is essentially a reflective foil-hdpe tarp for £25 to string up in front of my west-facing living room window (so from outside to in I have tarp-window-blinds). It reflects 70% of the incoming sunlight and definitely keeps it a few degrees cooler.
Edit: cost

Yeah tell that to the workers that have to work outdoors, there’s no legal upper limit for working in high temperatures so workplaces force us to stay out.

They want us to suffer in our homes. It’s like an oven in older houses if you don’t have air conditioning.

And the thumbnail is a packed beach. Good advice but a lot of people think they know better. EDs across the country will be packed with people suffering heatstroke and with severe sun burn by tomorrow.

I’m in Norfolk where the hottest predicted temperature this week is 27 degrees. It’s 19 degrees today and absolutely perfect. Back home 35 degrees is predicted. It’s not like me to pick the best week to go away, so I’m feeling pretty pleased. No need to stay indoors here, thankfully.

As an Australian who absolutely HATES heat and just read about a European heatwave, I’m typing this with my cold fingers and feel so sorry for you guys particularly who don’t have aircon. You can rug up against the cold and feel nice and snug (personally loving it here right now) but escaping the heat is fucking miserable.

If you think the global warming we’re experiencing isn’t great, please remember that Reform UK is against renewable energies, against LTN and ULEZ, doesn’t understand basics like induced demand, is pro coal/oil, pro frakking, and embraces a climate change denial agenda (anything from co2 is actually good to scientists are trying to scam you).

Sounds like the north of England (where I live and moan about our crap weather) is the place to be. It’s a fresh and pleasant 21 degrees this morning
The humidity is also ridiculous at the moment, currently 23c in my garden with 80% humidity. Forecast is for it to stay above 45% all week even when the temperature forecast says 39c

We’re only expecting highs of 20 where I am, which is actually great and will feel tropical compared to normal, but I remember walking through Washington DC just over 10 years ago in 40C and it was absolute torture. I don’t think many Brits fully realise just how hot (and dangerous) these kinds of temperatures are.

I went out for a run this morning (early to beat the heat) and saw kids heading to school in their blazers and trousers.
Came back and saw them having their PE lesson in the blazing sun.
We don’t take the heat seriously enough in this country.

UK houses are not suitable for this kinda weather. Don’t stay inside, go to a mall or something. Also, I’m planning to start an A/C firm here in the UK since it’s still not a thing here. Bullocks.

I thought it would be fun to find out how many days over 35°c and how many over 40°c there have been in the UK in the 40 years I’ve been around
Turns out there were 19 days over 35°c and only one in 2022 over 40°c. By my workings, there’s been an compounded 4.4% increase year on year of days over 35°c
Not good…
Edit: just to make the point clearer:
35°C+ days:
Average per year
1989–1998
3 days,
0.30/year
1999–2008
4 days,
0.40/year
2009–2018
2 days,
0.20/year
2019–2026 so far
10 days (!!!)
1.25/year
Yes, in 2019-2026 the frequency of 35°c+ days has increased by over four times the frequency during 2009-2018. We are fucked.

We *need* a fundamental change in the infrastructure of this country to deal with these types of weather conditions moving forward.
This isn’t some sort of freak thing, this is happening EVERY YEAR. It’s not going to ‚go back to normal‘, this is the effect of climate change. *This is the new normal now*.
If we don’t accept that and deal with it, we’ll continue to suffer.
