Because the vast majority of forestry in the country is for profit. Grow and fell to sell. Why do you think every government won’t plant native Irish trees, because they can’t make anything off them for them or their private businesses friends.

Nearly all that land is technically rented out by landowners on contracts to the companies.

If we wanted proper forests you need the state to invest money in buying land to plant trees that aren’t for felling or at the very least offer said landowners a tidy sum every year for it.

Looks like sitka spruce monoculture. in an otherwise barren landscape. How depressing.

It’s not a forest, it’s a pine plantation. Most of Ireland’s natural forests were cleared by the British Empire centuries ago.
For further reading on the subject I would recommend the books:
      – A history of Irish forestry by Eoin Neeson  – Britain’s Habitats: A field guide to the wildlife habitats of Britain and Ireland.

    4. What you are standing on there is a farm. A wood farm. They grow it, cut it and sell it. Those trees are not native

If you want sustainable wood then this is how it’s done. The land is usually left for a few years before being replanted.

That’s hardly native hardwood you’re looking at. It’s the tree equivalent of a field of barley.

Unlike the dead zones where those trees are currently standing, that field is full of wildlife and was likely blooming a couple of months ago. In fact, I’m pretty sure I see some wildflowers still there. Hang around and you’ll spot some lovely bees and/or butterflies!

Because different parts of a commercial plantation are harvested at different times.

That’s basically pine tree farming. It isn’t forrest in anything approaching a natural sense.

A work colleague of mine had inherited his family farm, want to rewild it and Forrest it, he is finding it stressful because he wants certain native trees but apparently they aren’t allowed if he wants certain grants, will get better money if he planted other trees, many of which aren’t great for native wildlife

Frankly, considering the abundance of light and foxgloves, the felled portion is better for biodiversity than the spruce mono-crop.

It’s a national scandal. It’s except no one in power thinks that. But it is.

Even where not part of the Coillte forestry grown for produce, there’s feck all trees here.

Especially parts out west – just baron landscape I’ve heard locals refer to as wasteland. Best you can get out of those parts is grazing lands for sheep.

Ireland doesn’t have too many forest, compared to other countries 😒

    14. If you look at how most corporations attempt to carbon offset, they just plant rows of trees, same species, same age/size. This is not conducive to actual foresting. There should be a canopy but those trees would clearly be older and established. The ground cover , other small tree and shrub varieties can seek spaces in the canopy. Ultimately, taking a big hole out is a section can promote proper regrowth. I have no knowledge of this particular plot and its use . There clearly is a need for innovations in farming, forestry and renewable energy, and the utilization of the surrounding waters. If it’s anything like home building / acquisition, might not be a quick process 😐

Not only do coillte destroy the country with this monoculture crap, but they introduced ash dieback to kill off anything native left that isn’t even there’s. Worst organisation this country ever produced.

We’re controlled by deeply ignorant people in this regard.

Everyone knows that healthy native forests are vital, and we don’t care because we can scrape a few quid from pretending it’s someone else’s problem.

As A german, irish forests either look like a magical place or a collection of matches sticking from the ground, so densely packed the fallen trees still lean against each other.

    18. ChemiWizard on

Looks like this all over near me. Saddens me a bit, but it is private property, they replant and harvest new sections so a renewable resource. And most importantly it is not native forests.

    19. Far_Leg6463 on

It’s not even native, the scale of pine forestry is harming the land and making it, and run off tributaries, very acidic.

    20. The land is sold.

Over 90% of land, waterways and forests in Ireland are in private or corporate hands.

      What do we expect?

    21. EngineerMajor3157 on

Coillte is not an environment agency dedicated to sustainable practice forestry.

It IS a capitalistic „state-owned“ business for the creation of profit. They can cut down old growth forests (which have taken multiple decades and are composed of a variety of native tree species along with associated plants and underbrush) in some areas.
They can then replant mono-colony , non-native „forests“ (often Sitka spruce) for the explicit purpose of cutting them down at a later date, rarely more than a decade or two max. This not only results in weaker wood quality overall, but has impacts on the soil, local wildlife ecology and water quality.

They literally shut down their own conservation branch, presumably because the do-gooders who worked there highlighted some of the ethical issues.

They are also invested into by equity funds and the like, so not closed to just domestic investment and governance.

A decent amount of our forests also got butchered by the storms last year.

I spent my holidays this year in scandavia and its actually depressing what we accept as the norm.

    24. Ireland is the least forested in Europe, Irish people love cutting trees down…gotta have more grass

But seriously it be great if we planted native Irish trees…wilded my back garden.. oak trees growing aswell as a apple tree

I want cheaper furniture in this cost of living crisis ✅ I don’t want commercial trees planted to make that furniture the wood should just appear from nowhere ✅
