I walked along the dodder for the first time the other week hoping to spot a kingfisher. Every flash of blue I saw was some scrap of a plastic bag snagged on the branches by the water.
As a kayaker this is such a pain too. I hope everyone who does this steps on a big rusty nail.
My dog got a fish hook caught in her lip a few weeks ago cos someone left a tangled line full of hooks on the pier. I didn’t even see it, a small child could’ve gotten caught in it easily. The dog was ok, I’m €190 lighter.
I once rescued a pigeon in distress caught up in fishing line in a bush along the Liffey in Celbridge. Some kids had found it and asked me to help it out. Took me a while to unravel the fecker.
You do it by the sea sometimes if your hook gets caught in seaweed tie it to a wrock and come back when the tide is down to retrieve it, I don’t know why you would do it in a small river
Fair play to you. People who do this are just the *worst*. The Dodder is such a beautiful river and it is treated like a sewer. It’s teeming with birds and wildlife; otters, herons, kingfishers, bats, swifts etc. Terrible to think of them getting caught or tangled in disregarded lines.
Anyway, thanks for doing more than your share. 👍🏻
Found a bird caught in a fishing line hanging from a tree beside the River Fane before. Seems to be commonplace.
I took a day off yesterday rescuing a rook caught in a tree by fishing line

The Dodder is a kip since the storms a few months back. Shite hanging from all the trees.
