Social housing shouldn’t be allocated to anyone that isn’t a citizen or permanent resident.
Something is terribly wrong with the system if it’s admitting people are neither of those things.
Yeah this is such a bad look. They obviously know it’s a disproportionate amount of foreign nationals receiving houses. Sure handy number if you could get it
It only creates further distrust in government when they withhold information.

The problem with the many dunces in this comment section arguing that this data should be published is that the people being discussed in this article will lose the head over *anyone* not Irish in social housing. Wouldn’t even need to be a significant percentage. I’m sure the motives of people that this data be published so recently after children were burned out their homes for the crime of being foreign is all innocent though!
Seems like the truth needs to be kept under wraps.

It’s fine to allocate social housing to eu citizens in ireland. This isn’t the UK where they had a brexit so they can discriminate against non British (and non Irish btw) for council housing..
We can’t discriminate against non Irish. We have to use EU rules (which are not exactly a free for all. There are rules about registering and being able to support your own basic needs).

The underlying problem is social media. It’s an utterly poisoned well at this point. Councillors know that nomatter what the stats are, they will either be disbelieved outright, framed inaccurately, or commentators will just lie about them anyway. Now that the query was made, the stats must be released, but that won’t solve the problem; the cancer that’s growing exponentially within Irish society and western society in general. Society has lost control of public discourse, and it’s not coming back. I think the full import of that is finally starting to dawn on people, but it will be a massive fight to reassert the authority of knowledge, civility, qualification, and genuine inquiry again.

No, there’s a huge issue that you don’t want to release the nationalities of who’s getting social housing. Using the potential outrage via social media due to the government’s failing is a poor excuse.
Are we talking like, anonymous census data or publishing people’s unit number and nationality?
Because frankly I could believe either these days.

Absolutely nothing wrong with them publishing x% of social housing residents are whatever nationality.
In fact that is part of good policy design to have that data whether it shows a high or a low %.

That is low and our soft touch is why asylum seekers shop around and choose Ireland
im a bit confused, a lot of the critical skills visa jobs will pay more than the 40k or so or below a year u need to earn to qualify for social housing so i presume the social housing is being allocated to asylum seekers who are coming to ireland mainly from countries like nigeria, somalia, afghan algeria etc, most of them are actually economic migrants and dont even technically qualify for asylum but this government has changed this policy to a ‚humanitarian‘ one which does allow it
being here for 52 weeks and just hopping on the housing list seems very low, it was like being here for 3 years and then applying for citizenship (moved to 5 now) was also very low, its why ireland is targeted for a euro passport by a lot of these bigger asylum countries, we are i think seen as the easiest pathway to achieve it

What is true remains true whether you say it or not, Labour should stop trying to hide the figures and either defend or oppose them on the their own merits. I’d consider myself fairly left wing but can’t support this position. It’s tax payer money, the tax payer has a right to know how it’s being spent.
If non-nationals are over represented in terms of the allocation of social housing then perhaps the rules need to reviewed. If they aren’t then great, will kill a lot of misinformation.
With respect, anyone migrating here should be able to stand on their own two feet, with the exception of asylum seekers who have access to direct provision for housing.
