Where the hell are they gonna get their HVAC advice and amateur porn?

The VPN providers will get more rich. That’s the only thing that will change with these useless laws.

In this thread: people with zero forethought cheering on authoritarianism.

    4. TrollMcGoal on

UK continues to become more of an authoritarian nanny state and people will still cheer it on

What a dogshit website. As soon as you load the page it autoplays right-wing propaganda

    6. The only way to enforce this is with ID verification of proof of age.

Now you literally need to provide ID for Internet access.

Reddit has easily saved me north of £10,000 and has got me out of many a pickle when it comes to all kinds of stuff.

This is going to be utterly destructive for creatives.

And that’s before we even get into the countless Reddit threads where teenagers have sought advice after suffering abuse (often not aware they’re being abused or how seriously) and they’ve been told how and where to get help and it’s worked out for them.

Disgusting legislation that originated from right-wing moral panic being peddled by fundamentalist Christians that somehow we simply latched onto and collectively think is a good idea.

It’s going to go seriously tits up.

Doesn’t even affect me, well over 18 and no kids.

EDIT – yup, being downvoted by the right-wing fundamentalists, or people who think child abuse is cool.

this age limit should apply to bots too. Bots must have valid ID to prove they are over 16 and also they must indeed be over 16 human years old. this should give us a good several years freedom from the botpocolypse

    9. UnreliablePotato on

Instead of just restricting access, we should be treating the actual disease: social media itself. A great place to start would be dismantling the addictive algorithms designed to monopolize our attention

Coming to Washington DC as a new “protect the children” bill in 3, 2, 1….

    11. Firefox has a built in free VPN now. I expect they’ll see a surge in UK users.

The inevitable data breach will pose a significant threat to national security. They must be mad.

    13. So the AI can blurt whatever nonsense we are all saying here, but teenagers aren’t trusted to see the source?

    14. Separate_Selection84 on

Heard the guy’s speech and then he was like „I’m a big fan of AI“ so yeah nothing he said mattered after that.

I’m really conflicted about this: I like that Reddit would get less money and data because Reddit is run by bad people… but I dislike kids not getting access to communities that may be beneficial to them, especially where LGBTQ issues are concerned.

    16. I think a lot of people are forgetting that even if you’re over 16 you still have to verify

    17. Jumpy-Fuel-8926 on

The stupid thing about this is they actually had a opportunity to make this good and give parents have control and be able to parent their child’s online if only they talked to ISPs and got them to create a mandatory router level firewall instead of a China lite process that gives either your face or your ID to a random website who can store it as long as they want

It’s the evening curfew for 16 and 17 year olds that really gets me. Starmer’s meant to be this massive technocrat yet seems to think the internet has a watershed he can enforce like TV. How is any social media content more harmful after 9pm or whenever than at half 4?

    19. Broccoli--Enthusiast on

      It’s so sinister

I won’t be doing this, ht it also means I’m locked out of online discourse without using a VPN

That’s exactly what they want , they want restrict information and be able to identify anyone doing wrongthink it access information they don’t like with a simple push of a button

Fuck this country , I need out

    20. Go fuck yourself if you have an enthusiast hobby? How the fuck is woodworking or birdwatching or talking about your favorite sci-fi movie ‚harmful to children‘? Absolute totalitarian surveillance state nonsense

    21. calm_down_meow on

Can’t even read the article on mobile because of ads and other popups I’m not touching.

      The internet sucks now.

    22. doyouevenfly on

It’s insane because you hire a pedofile to create software to determine if someone is underage or not. And now they have free software to find underage people.

    23. Busy-Doughnut6180 on

I am an adult that pays for my internet at home and my phone contract. Why is that not enough to determine that I’m old enough to use it? Because I might have kids who also use it? Wouldn’t that be up to my discretion as a parent, if I was one? You know, the same way it works for age ratings on films or music. Are we also going to make it illegal to let your kids stay in the room if an 18 rated film comes on TV? Or to let them play an 18 rated game?

      Absolute load of bollocks.

    24. People praising this should remember that none of Epstein’s allies were brought to justice.

All you’ve done is support government censorship for all and sold out our children to the pedos who
will soon have a verified database of 16+ children.

    25. Darth_Toxess on

I don’t know what the fuck is wrong with the UK government. They should focus more on trying to fix their crippling economy than trying to „protect the children“.

    26. suttonhillsame on

for fcks sake. i’m 43 but i’m not giving over my ID for this nonsense.

    27. Few-Improvement-5655 on

Aside from the horrendous invasion of privacy, forcing adults to get government approval to participate in society, I feel like this is also basically cutting kids off from culture and modern society, which I’m sure won’t have any negative repercussions.

All around this is just disgusting.

    28. This is going to blow up in Starmers face. Social media is an unregulated shit stain on society but outright banning it for u16s is the wrong play.

I have seen a fair few kids coming on reddit looking for advice. Sometimes it is something as simple as being worried about their pets health and asking if they need to convince their parents to go see a vet. Sometimes it is much darker asking about what to do about abusive parents.

This whole thing screams „i am screwed and need to create a legacy“ it will be rushed and terribly implemented and a giant pain in the ass for everyone. Most importantly though, kids will end up losing a vital way to call for help when they are lost and don’t know what to do.

    29. You’d think that two adults in their thirties who own a house with zero children around wouldn’t need to prove they’re of age to view certain websites, but that’s probably far too sensible for any government to try to figure out.

    30. „It could be as simple as a facial recognition check“

Yeah okay tell me who is checking and where the data goes? Oh and how much money the (notoriously shit at IT projects) government are paying to a (probably not British) third party for this.

Everything about this is shit, stupid, and short-sighted.

    31. Player-0002 on

Wait wait, Reddit can go fuck itself but they’re banning fucking YouTube? What the fuck? Are they going to ban the internet too? Honestly Britain should sack their government. Preferably with violence.

    32. I think a lot of people are missing how damaging this ban will be.

Let’s ignore the issue of it weakening the people’s ability to mobilise for any cause and think about what happens with the next government.

This has made the cliff for tyranny into a fucking footpath, your government knows who you are what you are saying which should terrify you.

I think really that’s the main point this is isn’t for the children but to easily target protestors and others that dissent.

    33. Detachabl_e on

Starmer gonna die on this hill.  Not gonna see another labor win in a very, very long time.

    34. Mr_master89 on

Happened here in Australia, kids got around it, some parents are mad that the government aren’t doing enough about it instead of actually doing something about it themselves.
