I can see this being a complete success.
Took them 20 years to figure out their ordering model isn’t suited to Japanese introversion 😂🤦♂️
The biggest problem is how stingy they are with the amount of vegetable toppings they give you.
Does anyone else think the bread is also kinda different? I love Subway back home, but I’m always disappointed with Subway here, and I can never really put my finger on what exactly it is.
They’re so expensive though. Maybe it’s the way I customize it but whenever I go there and get a regular sub set with a large drink and fries I end up paying more than 1,500 yen.
Lmao it’s also just shit. Why would I ever go to subway over a Kombini.
Subway used to be good in the US and Japan, then it was good only in Japan… now it just sucks globally… why doesn’t it go under already and relegate itself to the memories of Christmas past.
Perfect time to update – just as good sandwich shops start to open. Dumbass company.
They are fucking stingy, I asked if they could give me a bit more salad and they said no because there’s a limit. Is this maybe tied into all the weakening yen and shrinkflation? Not sure.
In my home country you can ask for extra veg/salad at no additional cost. You want 12 soggy tomato slices in your sub? It’s not going to be nice but you could if you wanted to. I literally counted 3 pickle slices in my sub.
i can definitely emphasize with this because the first time I went to Subway (here in Japan) I was clueless. I literally wanted to give up and would have done if I wasn’t mid-order.
The new touchscreens are good but honestly? Subway isn’t that delish anyway. I mean it’s only about the same standard as regular Japanese bakeries. It’s not in league with Burger King for example.
Many times got behind someone ordering and it took forever as they had no clue.. A new one just opened in Sannomiya, Kobe and it has 2 digital screens.
No it’s not working because the people making the sandwiches are not dressed as maids!
I could have told you this 15 years ago.
Subway is the number one fast food restaurant in the USA. Google it! Fight me!!!!!!
It’s true. (McDonald’s makes more money, subway has more locations)
It’s doesn’t take a genius to figure out why it doesn’t work in Japan. Pretty sure a down syndrome chimpanzee could see the cultural reasons.
My brain was thinking as „subway“ as in ordering food while riding a train like they do in china and then they deliver the food to you at the next stations. lol
This is just an excuse. In reality, Subway have ignored existing Japanese competitors such as convenience stores and bakeries already offering sandwiches. When you can walk out of a store with a sandwich in 20 seconds, ordering in a Subway is not worth the time.
Cultural autism. I see people in this comment thread mocking subway because its obvious that this doesnt work with japanese introversion/culture, but imagine having a culture so bad that you cant tell someone what you want on a sandwich.
It doesn’t help that a lot of people here don’t have any experience with “ordering a sandwich” to start with
In lots of western countries we grew up choosing and ordering all kinds of combinations from delis and sandwich shops, that doesn’t really exist in Japan 🤷♀️
Plus, ordering Subway here is MURDEROUSLY SLOOOOOW.
I’m convinced that kills it too. I have stood in so many snail’s-pace Subway lines out here, always surprised at how long it takes to serve even just a few customers and hoooowwwwww sllooooowwwwwwly they put those toppings on. If you can’t get customers through the line, you can’t get their money.
I’ve sadly seen 2 Subways in this town (Takamatsu, Kagawa) open up but then close over the years 😞
If they do it this way, then maybe I can finally order a custom sandwich.
I just had their new tacos sandwich, it was pretty subpar.
I doubt it has anything to do with that, what about Starbucks which is a hit.
Thats why I don’t eat subway in germany. I don’t want to explain what I want to have on my sandwich to some stranger.
Everyone’s commenting on how shit Subway is in Japan, while ignoring the main point of the article: that many Japanese people are so socially stunted that they feel nervous ordering face-to-face.
Sounds about right. Direct human interaction in Japan is … chotto … mhmm … let me suck some more air through my teeth to build some courage.
Just like when I had to tell the employee that I didn’t want pickles in my sandwich, 5 years ago. An experience that still haunts me to this day.
I hate Subway here. The employees count out everything to some exact number, like pickles and peppers, and they charge extra for fucking cheese. What kind of sub doesn’t have cheese on it? That is not an option item…
Many years ago early Subways here were just modeled on the US shops, so customers were given empty cups to fill themselves. However, there were big signs telling you that there were no refills.
The absolute tight-wadded cheapness of it all really put me off of it.
I hate them being so cheap that they weigh their french fries and take one or two out if necessary
I love Subway. I tried their self ordering machines, but it’s always so slow. They take like 10 minutes or more to fulfil an order. And now it’s way more expensive than before.
The problem is not the ordering process, it’s the lack of satisfaction with the final product.
