    1. From the article

The ever-growing financial investments in AI development have so far caused two major reactions. Some people see AI as a ruinous technology that will drag everything down, while others are still keeping their optimistic view of the traditional evolution cycle of computer technology. Brad Smith definitely belongs to the latter, although he is asking his colleagues to have a closer look at how „normals“ are expressing their dissatisfaction with the current state of the (tech) world.

Microsoft president and vice chairman Brad Smith recently shared his – definitely informed – opinion about the growing backlash against AI. Smith thinks that other leaders in the industry should listen when people express their disdain for „pro-AI“ speakers attending graduation events. Smith believes that they should take the backlash as a significant wake-up call, because younger generations have always been the most eager early adopters of the latest technology products and trends.

Tech executives are definitely loving the concept that AI will revolutionize everything – although they might overestimate its capabilities because of what Box’s CEO called AI psychosis. At the other end of the spectrum, students who have completed their education are now looking at an increasingly complex job market.

    2. Wake up call, that’s a hoot. Tech leaders only want to hear the kaching of the cash register.

    3. No, I’m pretty sure they’re anti-AI. They don’t like slop bots that produce ugly shite to the detriment of the environment. The fact that it can replace people is just another drop on the pile.

    4. he can start putting his money where his mouth is at and walk back from this data center madness

    5. Wake me up when Smith stops his company from adding Copilot to products. Until then this is just pandering.

    6. This is a mistake. A lot of ideas live on university campuses that don’t exist beyond them, and AI being a bad thing is certainly one. Meanwhile in businesses across the country, everyone is using AI or looking to adopt it even more. Software companies are full of AI tools right now. The decision has already been made and industry is adopting AI to the biggest degree possible. If you doubt this, look up Anthropic’s revenue growth right now – quite possibly the fastest-growing company in history because its tools have become essential in software development. That’s a litmus test of how much AI adoption is taking place in tech, and in business in general.

A lot of what we’re seeing on University campuses is the entitlement people feel they have towards future jobs they haven’t earned yet. It’s like they’ve forgotten the history of graduates who graduated during the Dot Com crash, or the 80s oil crisis, or the 90s recession. There are graduating classes that were immediately drafted and sent to fight in Vietnam, there are graduating classes that filled boats going to Europe to fight fascism.

Here’s the two things graduates must never forget:

      1. You’ll have to hustle all your life. No job is guaranteed, you have to earn your jobs.

      2. The economy fluctuates and you don’t know what market you’re graduating into, it’s beyond control. There could be very few jobs. You may have to start your own business to stay employed. See 1.

I felt like such an old man the other day. I rarely eat fast food but my family wanted Wendy’s. I went inside since the line was long in the drive through. I went inside and no one was at the counter for like 2 minutes. So I went to the kiosk spent like 2 minutes trying to do a simple sub but there was no option or upgrade so I went to the front again. Someone came up and said „sorry we don’t have anyone to take orders…. “ So I leave go to the drive through because now I just want to go home. Well it’s fucking AI. I try for 3 minutes ordering stuff on the menu. Finally a person comes over speaker and says sorry we no longer carry that…so after 10+ minutes of using broken and busted shit a person had to come along and fix it…. Does it work most of the time just like a person sure but I’m just going to be the old man and yell at clouds now cause fuck this BS.

    8. Wait… wasn’t Satya Nadella the one touting how Microsoft now has 30% of their code written by AI, sending a clear message to the investors that the industry can lay off at least 1/3 of the software engineers? If they „invest“ in the „right“ AI products, of course.

This guy is expert at saying things people want to hear. That is all. Seeing him do the same thing for 15 years.

Being replaced before you can enter the workforce (to pay off those peaky student loans) would concern me as well.

Yes, catering to the popular internet narratives is how you prepare for the future.

The arrogant Ai or lazy Ai speeches can go. Otherwise, you’re doing a disservice to young people by not informing them how critical it is for them to get the right skills in Ai and how it advances us in curing disease, exploring space, and disseminating information, to name a few

    12. Ehhh there’s definitely both lol. A solid half of young people now viscerally hate anything AI regardless of its practical effects, while the other half just don’t like it being used to ruin their lives

    13. I mean, what kind of graduation message is “congratulations on earning your soon to be irrelevant degree.”?

We can be anti-ai and anti-replacement at the same time, they’re not mutually exclusive

    15. Has he tried talking to his leadership team about this? The MS AI CEO, the actual CEO, and the president are all saying different things.

Whenever corporations get a „wake-up call“, they never think the call is telling them to *stop doing the thing*. It’s always: *keep doing the thing, but market it differently.*

    17. Social Media enjoyed widespread and enthusiastic adoption by younger generations, all the way back from when I was in middle school. AI will not be given the same treatment, and they need to understand that we don’t want it.

    18. „But Black Dynamite, I sell drugs to the community!“

      -The rest of Microsoft probably

I genuinely do not understand how this is replacing jobs. I have used AI before, it’s not that smart. Vibe code it long enough and it will go full son of Aiton and start deleting everything. It’s dumb, if they want to use AI so much then go ahead, it’s a job of its own cause someone needs to babysit it a lot.

    20. Why? Those are the kids that will never get a job because of AI. They are irrelevant to maximizing shareholder value
