About 6 million appointments (inpatient and outpatient) are held in the HSE this year, so this equates to about 2 months of appointments.
I was put on a waiting list to see a rheumatologist about a year ago now and still haven’t heard anything… Now I’m wondering if I ever will. 🥲
HSE also have a hiring freeze atm.
Population hasn’t been this high since the famine.
Raw number of people waiting isn’t a useful metric.
It should be the % of population.
Lessons will be learned.

Is this public waiting list only?
Over the last 20 years nearly a million people moved here. We have taken in large numbers of refugees, many of whom need medical treatment.
The native population is aging rapidly. We have thrown money at the problem in an inflationary enviroment, after years of under investment. A lot has improved, however the policy of rapid migration plus a aging population has created a monster.
Went to the Bonds today with my vey elderly Mam for a pre catharact operation check up, 3 different scans and a consultation, 2 hours, 300 euros up front. Operation next month. If you can pay, its a different country.
My wifes step father nearly had total vision loss in his left eye from a catharact before he was treated, for comparison.
I tried to come home from Australia with 4 years clinical experience. Couldn’t get a job…almost glad with that workload
One in every five people in Ireland are so sick as to need a hospital visit? That’s literally incredulous! Or are hospitals being used to treat folks that would – in other juristictions – be treated in step-down clinics? Farcical!

Last week I got a letter informing me that my appointment was rescheduled for the month after the date.
This is the 4th rescheduling for this appointment.
That was after an initial 8 month wait for the first appointment.
It’s crazy how much we pay for a healthcare system that’s barely even present.
So like 16 per cent or the entire population is on a waiting list?? What the actual F
I told my 15 year old son to get on a waiting list for a hip replacement. Hopefully, when they finally schedule the operation in 50 years time, he’ll actually need the surgery.
OMG the computer system is broken or they’re using AI. Are they counting the same people multiple times??
