I like how the last line just says „data available at fancy science website“ instead of „based on Facebook friends“

I dont think the floating 3d gender symbols are necessary, though if the data is accurate then that implies a curious trend!

Maps like this always make me suspicious. You got all of Newfoundland red except the Wreckhouse and Port Aux Basques region. Shirley and Bob are only friends because there’s no one else around, b’y.

must be why the murder rate is so high in Central America.

male and females cant be friends unless they are related.

    5. This explains so much. To me it’s completely normal, even expected, and I’ve always found it weird and creepy when people draw gender lines on friendships. All the women I knew growing up had male friends. The place I grew up is a blue dot in a sea of yellow and red so that tracks.

If I had to look for a correlation, I would say it’s that rural white people don’t have many cross-gender friendships.

Or maybe that cold weather tamps down cross-gender friendships.

Or that large bodies of water encourage cross-gender friendships.

But this is one of the few maps these days that doesn’t have an obvious political or demographic pattern beyond the line at the US southern border.

    7. I would say it’s more a trend of when they first join Facebook or social media in general. When I was using Facebook I friended anyone suggested but rarely interacted with people I didn’t know well.
These days I wouldn’t be so cavalier in my choices.

You can see a correlation between Black and Hispanic US populations and more cross-gender friendships. Is it cultural?

Hard to be „just friends“ in cold weather, the drive to cuddle is too strong.

    10. I’m not sure how accurate the map is but cross gender friendships are a lot more common in Latin America than America and Canada. Obviously there’s still jokes about being friend zoned and all that type of stuff but by and large it is more common. I’m American with Argentine family so I’ve seen it before in Peru and Argentina where I’ve been

    11. is it too bad that I dont believe in female-male genuine friendships?… like… its always the man that starts talking to you because you might be attractive for him… and low key he will always have intentions… even if they act like they don’t u.u

    12. I get a chuckle out of how outdated the friendly aw shucks Canadian meme is. Cranky ass people. Too much internet. If I remember it has the highest percentage of Reddit users, and yeah. 90% of Reddit is a Make Me Angry simulator.
