The challenge won’t be passing the rules, it’ll be enforcing them. Teenagers have always been remarkably good at finding ways around restrictions online.

    2. > The two people — and two separate industry representatives — said the government is set to outline its proposals to Parliament on Monday, ahead of the June 18 Makerfield by-election, though the timings could change, according to one industry rep and the person familiar with discussions in No. 10.

      > Embattled U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer is looking for a clear policy win as he fights to stay in office.

The under 16 ban announcement is going to be extremely rushed and botched.

The UK should not be bringing in something this big with secondary legislation all because Kier needs a „Win“

    3. You see, it’s orwellian speech restrictions like this and the acompanying inconvenience and data protection issues, that totally make me want to vote Labour.

A ban on disappearing messages? So, the government want to ensure children’s communication with others can be ‘safeguarded’ – in other words, children do not have independence and their private relationships are someone else’s business

Such a weird hill to die on because if this involves any sort of ID verification for adults or scanning images/text messages then Starmers reputation is going to somehow get even worse.

There’s a few things that I dont think Labour have done a bad job on since they’ve gotten in but this 1984 stuff makes it impossible for me to back them going into any sort of election local or national level. They simply have to be absolutely demolished at all levels as long as this is their stance.

All it takes is one bad egg government to get in and they will utilise what is being proposed to shut down freedom of speech online.

      > U.K. ministers will announce a ban on under-16s accessing certain social media platforms as well as livestreaming, disappearing messages, and functionalities that allow communication with adult strangers,

It sounds like private messaging and multiplayer game chats are set to be banned, along with privacy protecting measures like disappearing messages.

A ban on disappearing messages is going to see Signal and WhatsApp leave the country, if it applies to them.

    7. the „disappearing messages“ shows a very clear one from the Government: Do as I Say, Not as I Do.

    8. What an absolute fucking disgrace of a government.

      Traitorous authoritarian bastards.

Starmer needs to be removed. He’s a failure of a PM.

This law is insane and so against any best practice, but far too many people would cheer on censorship instead of parenting.

The first rule of online safety for *everyone* is ‚do not put your ID online, every, but especially not on a third-party service‘.

It truly baffles me that this seems to somehow not have been taught in the UK. Is it because there’s no mandatory ID?

(I know that politicians also don’t care and are reasonably tech-illiterate, but it’s still baffling that someone would go ‚you know what would be great? Uploading really sensible data to commercial services processing that data)

Hope those little whippersnappers don’t open up mumsys purse and get her driving licence and takes a pic of it.

Or go into the passport tub and get dad’s passport.

Or get older siblings provisional licence.

You’re going to get thousands of stolen identities because of kids using family IDs on dodgy sites

This is the policy Kier Starmer is banking on to save his job on the day two ministers resigned over his refusal to fund defense properly. Pathetic.

George Orwell is rolling in his grave yall. it’s such a weird hill for Labour to want to die on

    13. can we ban keith from using disappearing messages too? I mean technically he’s already banned from doing it but I actually mean enforce it such that when he confesses to it, like he already has, he’s arrested

      I’m tired boss

Seeing labour implement nanny state stuff and claim it’s to help is so rich

I understand people hate social media but they all use it and cutting people off from that without providing reasonable alternatives, third spaces, youth clubs, social care and interventions or understanding how attached young people are to their devices just leaves these changes as harmful and further alienating

Young people will find less regulated alternatives

And the rest of us get to lose privacy completely

Simplistic solution to a complex problem.

It would be good if something could be done about tailored algorithms, and possibly even just funding basic online literacy courses, especially for people aged 50+

    16. Hellstorm901 on

Unenforceable, it’s just cover to bring in Digital ID, from what I understand the government just summoned an „advisory group“ to discuss Digital ID in the UK at the same time they’re doing all this which is a very odd „coincidence“

    17. VPN aside, is there anyway an adult can get around this without giving personal id?

    18. BigReference1xx on

Headline: „Under 16s banned from social media“

Actual headline: „EVERYONE will need to provide government ID to use the internet, to prove they’re over the age of 16“.

      That’s the real story, folks.

    19. I am not in support of the ban but I feel there are easier ways to handle this, the whole UK trying to police the internet has been a bit of farce in their approach from the get go.

Honestly it shouldnt be about trying to achieve some impossible 100% ban but about shifting the playing field so its much easier for parents to be parents and the easiest honestly is to focus on the mobile phone market.

Trying to police home computers from afar is impossible, thats a task that should fall on parents directly and tools should be given to them to easily do so if they so wish, but mobile phones are generally harder to police but they can also be much more easily restricted because the vast majority of them are purchased on contracts with service providers who can lock out such aspects at the point of sale and its much harder for someone under 16 to walk into a store and fake their way through such a purchase then to use someone elses ID online.

It also doesnt require the government to stick its nose into everything, a lot of phones come with extensive parent tools to block downloading of apps etc built into them. If the government wants to they could just make it mandatory that they are on for all phones sold to under 16s.

    20. What I don’t get is that they want to ban U16s from social media but allow 16 year olds to vote?
A 15-16 year old isn’t getting their news from a newspaper.
You can’t ban U16s from getting information and then expect them to make an informed decision at the voting booths. I’m sure this is by design but it’s not going to lead to more Labour votes that’s for sure

    21. BreadfruitOdd9974 on

Somebody I know who is well under the age of the proposed ban has taught herself two foreign languages to a conversational level and regularly views, YouTube videos on culture and archaeology. She is a massive fan of everything dealing with linguistics and language and she’s not even out of primary school yet . The primary school is shit . None of this is available on child YouTube.. if YouTube is included in this, the UK can go get fucked honestly

    22. doubleo_maestro on

This seems so sketchy. Not for one minute do I think the UK government is trying to protect kids. I’d put money on this ban is to instead force adults to prove they aren’t teenagers, subsequently linking individuals with their accounts so they can snoop on us easier.

Disappearing messages? Ohh like Starmer’s disappearing messages on his WhatsApp oh right 1 rule for 1 and 1 rule for another

Hope this hurts Labour if they are going to rush such stupid laws they don’t deserve to be in power

This is the slow creep of the surveillance state being forced upon us by the paedophilic entities that run our society.
