In 2024, the RCMP centre completed 6,951 firearm traces. Of these, 4,197 were identified as crime gun — 2,814 of which had a known source.
The centre reports that 71 per cent of those firearms traced in 2024 were domestically sourced long guns, 17 per cent were smuggled handguns, nine per cent were domestically sourced handguns and two per cent were smuggled long guns. A small number of firearms were not categorized as either long guns or handguns.
Sixty-seven of the crime gun traces in 2024 turned up privately manufactured firearms, sometimes called homemade “ghost guns.
”Among the completed firearm traces where the source of the firearm and its type of action were known, semi-automatics were found to be the most common.

Oh man. If I hadn’t been banned from r/Canada for arguing with gun rights folks, I’d be all over this post if it’s there.

Im not convinced this article is correct. Most major urban police forces are stating the opposite by a massive margin.

These are overwhelmingly long guns, but [murders using guns in Canada mostly use handguns](https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/t1/tbl1/en/tv.action?pid=3510017001). Is the redacted data telling us the most common crime committed with a gun is poaching or something like that?

Yes. Totally misleading. Replica guns aren’t classified as firearms and need no licensing. Also, how many of these guns were used in domestic violence? Having those included in the stats without a caveat is misleading. Sadly this makes zero difference in terms of prohibiting firearms unless you prohibit every single make of firearm in the country.

„Most crime guns traced by RCMP came from within Canada, internal reports say“ is the actual title.
OP tagged this post as „Most guns used in Canadian crimes were not smuggled in from abroad: internal reports“
There’s a lot of missing context. Specifically that the data used to push this narrative doesn’t capture the whole picture (infact the report isn’t even complete).
Multiple police bodies have come out saying the opposite, there’s a reason why they’re all refusing to participate in the buyback.
No one is shooting up downtown with a 18.6 inch barreled 22lr rifle. They’re getting smuggled pistols and dracos from the states.

Many of Canada’s largest cities and a large share of gun violence involving handguns—are located in Ontario and Quebec. Provincial force traces. Toronto does its own tracing. You cant use this RCMP tracing data by itself to make that conclusion…
