Normally I’m completely fine with picking based on merit/seniority/role needs/whatever over making choices for political reasons, but the challenge with this administration is that they have a pattern of using those excuses to make political choices targeting race and gender.

I simply don’t find the administration credible when they say they aren’t blocking high profile roles for women when the DOD stepped in to block promotions for female captains, and when others in the administration or stopping the advancement of women in their respective agencies. It’s impossible not to remain suspicious that this wasn’t an intentional slight against women.

The fact we have to defend this decision just shows that some people have completely deranged from normal thinking

    3. I mean I am happy that the crew is so diverse in terms of ethnicities. There’s no foul play at hand from what I gather from the article. It really does seem like they just had the skills for the selected objectives

Something like shooting people into space for new or long term missions shouldn’t be burdened by what the crew is made up of. If the people selected are intelligent enough to carry out the mission and not get themself or others killed then it shouldn’t matter what the crew is made up of

    5. A very very small but loud percentage of people care about the gender or ethnicity of astronauts. Its irrelevant, boring and exhausting to listen to.

    6. PussyForBrekky on

I’d rather have the best people who are trained to have the best chance of completing a mission then the sake of diversity..

I don’t think there’s anything to defend. There was literally a woman on Artemis 2. They don’t pick their astronauts for diversity, they pick them to be skilled, the diversity is a byproduct of that and doesn’t happen 100% of the time. Plus, they got a brown man and a black man here, so I don’t wanna hear anything about NASA not being diverse.

Honestly, A3 is such a nothing mission that I find it hard to care. Send some women to the moon. Put Christina Koch on Artemis 4 and I’ll be happy.

      No one:

CBS: a person on reddit is outraged!

Reddit: NASA is being attacked by CBS!

    10. MaynardsUnit on

Its 4 people. You pick the best and that’s it. This shit has to stop.

It’s CBS „reporting“ on reddit comments. I.e., this isn’t news — It’s tabloid clickbait. Which is sort of what I’ve come to expect from CBS since Weiss took over.

In this article, the author „cites“ a single person on reddit (no source linked) complaining about the crew’s lack of women, combined with a tweet from the NASA director (no source linked) saying that women make up half of the most recent class of astronauts. At no point is there a screenshot, photo, or link to any of the places they’re purporting to get their information from.

This article is a nothing-burger that was designed to rile people up for angertainment.

The bigger issue is 2/3 of the flight hardware is nowhere close to being ready. Yet the dog and pony show rolls on.

Omfg some stuff isn’t always how inclusive it can be. Id much rather have the most qualified person doing any job on the planet. If that had meant an entire crew of women, or no women, all white, all black, all potatoes or tomato people then so be it. This is all coming from a woman btw. Would it have been cool to see a woman or women on the crew, sure, but if these men were the most qualified then thats the end of the discussion!

    14. its funny how double minded, misguided and selfish american liberalism is

they never speak out when it actually matters, but for bs like this they always speak out

    15. Malcolm_Morin on

I don’t care who is going, as long as they’re fit for the job and can get it done.

First the Moon, then Mars. Do it without Elon, he can get fucked.

But focus on what it means for humanity as a whole.

    16. Oh my word, not with this again.

Best people for the job, period. Space is dangerous.

    17. From the article, „Isaacman said he had „personally been to space twice with 50 percent female crews. My closest advisors and some of the smartest engineers I know are women. In our latest NASA leadership organization, nearly 50 percent of the center directors and mission directorate leadership are women.“

He continued: „The last astronaut candidate class selected under this administration was majority female [six women and four men] because they were the best of the best, including one astronaut [Anna Menon] I previously went to space with.“

And yet they didn’t pick one of those women…

Folks need to stop looking at social media like its the majority of people.

    19. undoingconpedibus on

Unfortunately central casting didn’t have enough female candidates during this round!

Let us see who is chosen on the 4th mission the one that lands on the moon. I am much more interested in who is chosen for that mission. It should be based on merit, nothing else.

    21. In a male dominated industry the majority of ideal candidates are gonna be male.

I think, at this point, its safe to assume that female candidates were not rejected because of their sex.

    22. Using this „controversy“ to distract from the fact that neither lander will be ready by the time this mission is scheduled to launch? 🤔

    23. Maybe I’m naive, but when space travel is involved I automatically assume that the people selexted are the most skilled options available for that kind of very specific mission

    24. I have to say it.. sanitation. Artemis II had mechanical failure in the bathroom and they probably want to make sure they’ve fixed it.

The toilet kept getting clogged and it’s suggested it was too much urine freezing it. Men have a hose they just point into and it’s immediately jettisoned. Because of the failure they were all pooping in bags and the one female astronaut peeing in them.

Jesus Christ this is such a nothing burger. The press does itself no favors writing slop like this. Some dude that needed to pay rent made an article using one reddit comment. If I wrote articles using reddit posts or comments I could write all sort of crazy stuff.

    26. OccamsPlasticSpork on

NASA seemed to accomplish a lot more when men did everything. Hell, modern NASA isn’t even matching what NASA did nearly sixty years ago.

    27. bullettenboss on

I just hope, they don’t cite bible verses up there again. We should instead get a moment of silence for all the scientists that have been incarcerated, tortured and killed because of religious cults. Or anything that brings together humanity, without referring to private beliefs.
