    1. If it wasn’t for the insane healthcare he has access to he wouldn’t be renewing his ticket to the land of the living with his health issues..When he finally goes, it’ll be fascinating to witness how the GOP acts like they always were against this orange moron once they no longer have to fear him

    2. Do it and see how that works out for you Trump. When you import all of your oil, potash, and other stuff from Canada.

Of course I had to be living here in the States when this prick is in power.

Must be a day ending in Y.

I don’t really care what he says at this point. I would like our government to be a little more determined in terms of moving projects within Canada and making trade arrangements internally and internationally faster though.

    4. Toronto-1975 on

honestly who cares anymore. it’s not like that rancid pedophile would honour a deal even if it was renewed. renew it dont renew it whatever the word of the US means nothing until they deal with their fascism problem.

    5. SilverBeech on

This is Trump’s „negotiating“ tactic: be the unpredictable partner and threaten the worst outcome so other parties offer concessions.

Those who panic and take this seriously are simply playing the role he wants them to play.

    6. Here we go again

I’m sure that 4.5% inflation will make this super popular

Carney will probably just wait for midterms and hope some senators and Congress pressure trump to do something helpful to them

    7. Sigh. How’s that new health care plan coming buddy? How’s the peace deal for Iran/Ukraine/Lebanon/Cuba/Israel/Venezuela? How’s infrastructure week? Hopefully Carney and crew can keep him blathering nonsense until November and then get some work done when there’s a little more adult oversight around. If he invoked the six month withdrawal today, it would still come into effect after the midterms.

    8. Rich_Tax1597 on

Trump will be long dead by the time it actually needs to be renewed.

Wake me when he actually goes nuclear and gives 6 months notice for withdrawal.

    9. babaqewsawwwce on

He knows he’s not going to get what he wants and knows the deal benefits the US.

This is a bully tactic because he’s going to lose the house and potentially the senate in the fall.

    10. I’ll be honest I figure he’d have already threatened this by now if the war in Iran hadn’t happened.

It’s just his standard approach of give me what I want or I’ll blow up the infrastructure that keeps the US in charge.

CUSMA renewal is in 2036, discussions being held this year are a review for a possible extension beyond that.

This isn’t news and shouldn’t be reported on; unlikely Trump and his Cabinet would have any say by that point.

    12. Old_General_6741 on

Talks are still on going but I do believe he will renew the agreement eventually because of some concession or something else.

    13. FriendshipOk6223 on

He is trolling us to put pressures to extract more concessions. It isn’t a big surprise as he is doing the same trick again and again.

    14. Oh no, please don’t take away your unfettered, unrestricted access to Canadian resources…. please note stop, we really don’t want the ability to charge you more for them…

    15. Who honestly cares what Trump says at this point? Its all just meaningless nonsense that should largely just be ignored. Nothing he says has any substance behind it.

    16. UnionGuyCanada on

He needs chaos to be able to drift and make people think he is doing something of value.

Canceling would be chaos and pain for tens of millions of workers. Canada would immediately enter a deep recession as we had to find a new home for 65% of our goods.

It would suck for decades, but it would also enable us to finally move completely away from the US on trade, except where it helps us.

The US states would revolt, as they make billions off CUSMA, but Trump appears to not care.

The only one who benefits from this division is our enemies, but here we are.

    17. As a Canadian , I’d like to respectfully request that the people of USA fix this fucking problem by whatever means necessary

    18. grathontolarsdatarod on

That would mean actually backing out of the treaty.

That is, breaking the treaty, and the honour of the US government.

This period is NOT a renewal.

    19. immigratingishard on

The trade deal that you put in place and negotiated? That same one that you said, and I quote, is the „largest, fairest, most balanced, and modern trade agreement ever achieved.“

      That same one?

    20. ComfortableSell5 on

He can not renew it all he wants, it just limps on as is for another decade.

He cannot pull out of it without congress, so who cares?

    21. Drummers_Beat on

I mean it’s still 2036 that CUSMA is actually up. If he wants to use the termination clause and remove the United States from CUSMA then he is welcome to do that.

However, if he does that and wants to continue this idiotic trade war then all that has to be done is restrict potash exports to the United States and send it elsewhere. If you want to go even harder, put an extra tariff on electricity exported to the United States. Limit softwood lumber exports.

Anyway, this man doesn’t know where he is and spends half his day shitposting on his echo chamber social platform. He’ll change his mind eighteen more times.

    22. He must have caught a whiff of Canada and Mexico making negotiations between each other to stand up to US bullying

    23. There is a mandatory joint review in July 2026 for CUSMA. I predict the US will not agree to extend it – to which the clause kicks in where annual reviews are required going forward. They’ll do this as a threat to Canada but won’t materially change the trade situation.

    24. Is it really a threat? Pulling out of the treaty requires Congressional approval, and given how much that’ll fuck over the US just as much as it will us and Mexico, I figure that there are enough representatives and senators who are sane enough to vote against withdrawal.

Add in the fact that the world as a whole and Canada in particular have been working to reduce trade dependencies on the US, and I feel that this won’t have the impact Trump is hoping. Yes, if he does this we will hurt, but he’s already done so many things to hurt us (economically) without cause, that I don’t see it motivating any Canadian concessions. It’s like if you’re going to hung for stealing a lamb, you might as well steal that sheep next to it. Trump is going to fuck with NAFTA no matter what, so why should we waste time appeasing him in an attempt to prevent it?

    25. Ok_Smile9222 on

Has he not been threatening this for over a year? Not surprising. Canada needs to continue the path of decoupling from the US.

    26. Surprise, surprise.

Who could have *ever guessed* that he would threaten to rip up the trade deal, and walk?

Just ignore his tantrum. Actually, I **expect** Trump to give notice to pull the USA out of CUSMA – he always chooses brinksmanship, so we should full expect him to give the 6 months‘ notice of abrogation – only to put more pressure on Canada and Mexico to agree to punishing terms, and cancelling abrogation at the last minute before the US actually withdraws. It is his *modus operandi*.

Nothing to see here, move along.

    27. My guess is that this saga is dragged out until Trump is out of office, then Canada and the next administration either renew CUSMA or a sign an alternate agreement. The majority of businesses, legislatures (even Republican legislators) and voters all want some continuation of NAFTA and recognize that the end of free trade between Canada and the U.S would be a net loss to all parties involved, regardless of what pivot is made afterwards.

Even in the middle of Trump’s trade war, the existence of CUSMA has largely been shielding Canada, the U.S & Mexico from the worst impacts by protecting 90% of our trade flows from tariffs etc. Without that guarantee, all parties would be suffering much more than they already are from Trump’s stupidity.

Additionally, tariffs on Canada were one of the few areas where a good amount of Republicans were willing to break with Trump, so I can only imagine how much worse that would be in a situation where the administration either tried or succeeded to completely dismantle CUSMA.

    28. AdAnxious8842 on

….and? This is like all the memes about the sun rising in the morning. It was expected. I would have been confused and probably nervous if Trump didn’t threaten to cancel the trade agreement.

    29. WhiteHatMatt on

Don’t care, we only have two years left. Were doing alright the past two years, maybe a competent administration will take office next term and we can get back to work.
