Do we really need an xmas special when there’s no currently airing incarnation of the show?
Twiggeh1 on
Well I suppose there’s some poetry to the fact that the guy who brought it back would be the one to kill it again
ixid on
It’s think it’s fair to say it was time. It’s been a gradual decline through the last 4 doctors.
thedudeisalwayshere on
Makes sense and it’s for the best.
Doctor Who died when Capaldi left on December 25th 2017
T_raltixx on
It really does need a decade rest. Then reignited with fresh writters.
CptDobby on
Time to leave it alone for 8-10 years and bring it back with a new style when everyone is ready. As is tradition.

*It was also announced that the BBC would be putting Doctor Who out to competitive tender – where production companies pitch to make the show – later this year.*
Seeing it’s basically a joint venture between Disney and the BBC now, it seems that this is going to end up as an Americanised Disney version now
Shame but the shows been terrible for a few doctors now
Edit: Turns out Disney pulled out which surprised me as you see a lot of people wearing bbc/disney clothes down outside the studio in Cardiff
Guess it be the next large American company
OverTheCandlestik on
Good. It’s been a poor show for a while. Let it rest for a long time
Turbo_Baggins on
Not a surprise they just seemed to be rehashing any old plot line with no real substance behind it
Now I’m wondering if the Christmas special has been filmed already but was so crap the BBC just want to cut their losses
asmiggs on
They have left the incoming writers with a lot of explaining to do. What a bizarre legacy Davies has left.
Glittering_Box4815 on
I mean they painted themselves into a corner, not surprised.

Back in tbe box you go Doctor Who, we’ll wake you up for the reboot in 10 years or so.
Batalfie on
They really shouldn’t have opened the first new era series off with Space Babies.
Ederlas on
Never been a fan of Dr who but what did they expect with the absolute garbage they’ve pumped out they last few doctors.
Cirias on
Doctor Who needs this tbh, it needs a completely fresh take aimed at a family audience taking full advantage of streaming. There’s still a separate animated series going on Cbeebies and I reckon that’s a good way to induct new fans into the franchise.
I would personally like to see a potential future series made on a limited budget like the original series‘ and being creative with aliens and settings. Story should be the main focus, we don’t need flashy effects if the story is solid.
Pen_dragons_pizza on
They need to completely reboot this show, it’s become so convoluted and dumb.
New series starting with background on his home planet, kill all the time lords and have him escape (always preferred him being the last) then have him go on adventures whilst dealing with this guilt and running from his past.
Cast a young guy, have fun with it but stop storylines that feel like they are preaching to the audience or shoe horning in elements.
Also don’t make the show so cheesy, we have come a long way in television over the last few decades, this show needs to be able to rival modern offerings, not be some campy and badly acted and directed show as it currently is.
ArtichokeDesperate68 on
Milked to death. It was incredible when it first came back – like nothing before seen. Chibnalls era was horrendous. The Disney collab was dreadful too. Leave it for a few years at least!
Suspicious_Weird_373 on
Do some shit radio episode that gets rid of the billie piper issue but call it canon.
Rest for a while, come back with fresh stories to tell, no actors from the RTD era allowed.
Aflyingmongoose on
And just like that Russel T Davis cements his fall from the man who saved Dr Who to the man who killed it.
Honestly every time ive ever seen a video with both Moffat and Davis in it, Davis comes across as an uninterested jobsworth in comparison.
QuantumOverlord on
Probably cancel it entirely. Was going downhill even by modern S4 when the stakes were already increased to saving the entire multiverse as a substitute for intelligent writing.
Zagrebista on
The 2005-25 series was a 20+ year old show being written by and run by the same people and somehow still remaining fairly popular (viewers were still in the millions for the UK alone).
They’ll rest it and then bring it back. Only worry is that tendering it out risks bringing in people who aren’t interested in it beyond a known name they can exploit. Say what you want about RTD, his enthusiasm was real.
nokeyblue on
Maybe it’s wrong for me to say this because I haven’t been watching religiously for a while, but I’m more relieved that RTD has left than I am sad that the show might stop for a while, even a long while.
Sarge626 on
For me personally, The show never recovered from the Timeless Child storyline, It already kinda went awry with how much more important the Doctor became in the Matt Smith Regeneration to like the whole universe but that Storyline completely shot my interest off a cliff.
Cralli123 on
Billie Piper could’ve been a great Doctor with a proper showrunner and good writers. Hell, I’d have Steven Moffat back at this point. I’m biased though. The Smith/Capaldi era was my favourite
tj100011 on
To be honest, he was ruining it – every show had to have a meaningful take on modern life/ way too preachy
SpudAlmighty on
Turning it into propaganda was never going to work.

That a team of writers thought Space Babies was a good idea said it all.

as I’ve said elsewhere: Put it to bed for a while. It needs a break. If/when it comes back, try something new like hiring competent writers because the writing for a while has been dogshit.
Trundlenator on
I guess it’s back into cold storage for the franchise for another 16 years, then a reboot under better and longer lasting management

Is anyone really that shocked? RTD came back, Butchered the show and left it in such a bad state that people don’t want to touch the Tardis anymore.
Along with that the viewership has been so god awful, breaking records for LOWEST ratings on more than one occasion that it’s clear there is something VERY wrong with the show.
The problem is. You can get rid of RTD that won’t change anything as the BBC are still the same and they will still want someone of the same type to take over. War Between Land and Sea was also REALLY awful which again doesn’t help much.
Yes you can point to the fact that Gatwa struggled in the role not only because the storylines were awful but he just couldn’t act as the Doctor. He has ZERO range. He can play ONE role very well but that role isn’t what the doctor is no matter how much they tried to make it that.
It doesn’t matter who takes over the role if the BBC don’t change it will still end up with more agenda pushing stories where the focus seems to always be choose an agenda for the episode and just try to build an episode around that.
RetroRocker on
Well done RTD, you took a failing show and somehow made it even worse, now you’ve fucked off and left it in the worst state it’s been in since 1989.
I used to love Doctor Who but after Capaldi announced he was leaving I completely lost my patience with it; everything since then had been a total horror show (and not in a good way).
I welcome the Wilderness Years 2.0. the show needs a good rest, bring it back ONLY when it’s right and not before. Oh and never bring Tennant back ever again.

If the BBC wants a sci fi franchise and give Doctor Who a rest why not make a Quatermass series could be like a British X files

Final lines when Doctor Who was cancelled last time.

Final line of this iteration of Doctor Who. How fitting. Great work, Russell.

Happy he’s stepped down.
Not happy that he tried to cling on for so long.
Not happy we won’t get a Xmas special.
Just gotta hope they get the right person in to take it forward now.
Job 1. See if they can rescue RTD’s cliffhanger ending storyline because it was probably pretty shite.

I loved the original RTD era. Peak Doctor Who.
I just couldn’t get into his revival. I was hyped but it fell flat.
I am NOT usually the kind of guy to throw the word “woke” around but Star Beast felt like it was written by Redditors.
Such a fall from grace. They should have just ended it after Capaldis run and perhaps revived it in 15 years.
