An [Iron Age](https://www.cnn.com/2026/01/07/science/iron-age-war-trumpet-scli-intl) [Scottish](https://www.cnn.com/2024/05/30/science/scottish-faces-reconstruction-perth-museum-scn) woman likely had her brains scooped out after she died as part of her burial, according to a new study that sheds further light on the complex funerary rites of this prehistoric culture.
Researchers from the UK and US found that this individual, most likely over the age of 30, had cuts on the inside of her skull.
These straight and parallel incisions were probably caused by “deliberate scratching or cutting” with a “sharp” tool, according to the study published in the journal [Antiquity](https://doi.org/10.15184/aqy.2026.10353).
“We think that what happened was that they (the bones) may have been snapped in half, and then they had been whittled to a very sharp edge” and tapered to an elongated point, she added.
This is the case with the ulna and the humeri. The femur, however, had a flat and smooth finish, according to the study.”
But why the brain?
That was a wild ride for today I learned. Great article and makes me want to learn more about Iron Age Scotland. And Wales and Ireland and all of that area.
Maybe they used the brain for tanning leather.
Perhaps she was a politician.
The Scythians documented similar practices around 500 BCE, using brain matter mixed with bone marrow as a leather softener for horse equipment and armor.
By the Iron Age I bet they could make some great brain-scooping tools. I mean, have you ever tried doing that with a rock?
