Of course, the Liberals did everything to try and avoid having this inquiry in the first place
The liberals know they were told that the election was being messed with but didn’t care to act because it was in their favor to let it go on.
It’s obvious these documents would likely reflect poorly on the Liberals. My guess is it would make them look incompetent or corrupt. This would be nothing new for this government but it may be approaching the straw that broke the camel’s back.
The worst case scenario for the Liberals would be for something to come out that justified Singh ending their partnership leading to a snap election. Then the election would be focused on Liberal incompetence or corruption, significantly hurting the Liberals’ election chances, and likely resulting in them becoming the fourth placed party.
These documents in all likelihood show things that the Liberals don’t want the public to see because it would look really bad for the Liberals and it would put their already slim chances at the next election at further risk.
So, everybody’s leaping to, “The Liberals are trying to weasel their way out of this, just like everything else!” And that’s an absolutely valid conclusion.
But have you stopped to consider that, one of the reasons these haven’t been shared is because it involves an active espionage/intelligence operation, and the fewer people who are in on the details, the more secure the operation is?
Folks in intelligence agencies take ‘need-to-know’ about as seriously as a heart attack. So it’s entirely possible CSIS (or one of our Five Eyes allies) said, “no”, and the LPC agreed. I don’t know that everybody involved has the necessary security clearance, or the necessary ‘shut the fuck up and keep this to yourself’ discipline to not destroy this operation – especially if there are votes to be gained by not doing so – but it wouldn’t surprise me to find out that operational security played a huge role in this decision.
