Is that the only dubious statement in the podcast series? It paints a very bleak picture of what was already a horrible con.

Gotta say, the Newswire header seems to capture the more important element vs this headline….
„Canadaland, Jesse Brown to Pay $885,000 and Issue Public Apology in Kielburger v. Canadaland Inc. Over False Claim That Was Foundational to Its Reporting on WE Charity and the Kielburger Family“
Jesse Brown is such a weird, gross dude. He’s publicly acknowledged publishing fabricated content while working at CBC. His strange, obsessive coverage of the Kielburgers resulted in death threats as a direct result of the defamatory statements he regularly made (and has now been forced to retract). Former employees have gone on record about his racist and misogynistic behaviour.
He’s particularly weird about women- just ask Rachel Gilmore. He (or someone he’s closely associated with) sent phishing links to journalists and redditors who have been critical of him online. He vanity searches his own name and reads comments obsessively.
Just a few days ago, he was on Twitter posting baseless speculation that the recent synagogue arson attempt was the work of Muslims. He has participated in events with Ben Shapiro, routinely amplifies Islamophobic talking points, and seems to spend most of his time online obsessing over threats and dangers while telling everyone how terrified he constantly is. It’s an exhausting combination of fearmongering, grievance politics, cowardice, misogyny and perpetual victimhood. Glad to see he’s facing some consequences of his shitty behaviour. The article doesn’t get into specifics about the cash settlement, but I hope it was a bundle. I’m sure the next grift will be soliciting donations from his supporters. Dude just needs to go away forever.

Hard to not see this as Jesse (and therefore Canadaland) losing the last bit of credibility they had.
Fuck. They had such promise as an organization. I’d love to see someone buy it up from Jesse and get back to the original mission.

So this is over one aspect of the WE charity investigation? Because I don’t see how this changes the obvious red flags about WE that canadaland appeared to uncover. There’s alot of shady stuff they can’t explain, and lets not forget how quickly they packed their bags when they got exposed at first. This is a very misleading headline

So pleased to read that a Canadian Court has awarded a substantial amount. But the harm that was done to the charity and to Canada can never be made right

Just another glaring example how media manipulates public opinion for their own benefits.
During Civid-19 government programs had to be pushed through at breakneck speeds to keep the economy going and get money to people potentially facing financial ruin. The rush to get programs running were always going to come with issues and were never going to be 100% efficient.
The Canada Student Service Grant program was one of those. It would have created paid positions for students. The We charity had the organizational capacity to roll out programs nation wide. The funding was never going to be issued to WE as a massive lump sum. Payouts were tied to the amount of time participants spent in the volunteer programs.
Then the media latched on to the Trudeau family connections and raised the specter that this was an improper contract to a company the Trudeaus had done past work with. It was a tenuous accusation at best. Their family has a long history with youth programs. From 2002 to 2006, Trudeau chaired the Katimavik youth program. It is of no surprise that the Trudeaus and one of Canada’s largest youth advocacy groups would have had a prior relationship.
Instead of having a quickly rolled out program that put money in the hands of students for volunteer work we ended up with a media manufactured scandal that in the end turned out to be a big nothing.
What a waste…what a prime example of media’s manipulation of public opinion. Much of it built on lies and misinformation.
We really need stronger regulations over our privately owned media outlets, and we need stronger repercussions when media outlets are found to be publishing lies like in this situation. Placing criminal charges in situations like this would send a strong message to media outlets to be more ethical and accurate in their reporting.
