We already have the SAMP/T NG. But Europeans prefer funding the American solution so they can keep US troops on their territory.
Que? That already exists. Maybe Aster and SAMP/T need some improvements – and indeed there are already programs to build upon those things – but I don’t think we want to be making a new system.
Europeans love to pay 100x times on american weapons… We should build our own Patriot Sysgem and entire European Federal Army to not be blackmailed by Russia, USA, China…
Won’t happen
I also would like to urge this
There is already as even the article says:
„Europe currently fields one air defense system with anti-ballistic missile capability, the Franco-Italian SAMP/T system equipped with Aster 30 interceptors. “
But please do not involve the germans for anything other than mere production or funding.
Seems something we could all cooperate on, without having massively different priorities getting in the way. Also cooperation and mass production would keep costs down.
When was a last time Europe built anything
>Europe currently fields one air defense system with anti-ballistic missile capability, the Franco-Italian SAMP/T system equipped with Aster 30 interceptors. Ukraine received a SAMP/T battery in 2023 and has used the system operationally, **although production volumes remain limited compared with demand.**
You will get a SAMP/T system (and the Asters) faster than Patriots, as shown in Denmark or the offer made to the Swiss. And I somehow doubt the Iran operation has improved things for Patriot deliveries. Now, more orders would be welcome, instead of always complaining about production (not targetting Zelenskyy here). Companies don’t keep idle capacity for the sake of it.
Zelenskyy should think about starting preliminary work on the 650 ton titanium godzilla so in a few years it would be ready to be launched against Moscow.
The problem is production capacity for aster 15 and 30 is a huge bottleneck. Current delivery time is 5-7 years after the order is placed. And MBDA is not interested in investing in new production capacity. Backlog is the best news for a company, just means security. And the multi-domain capability of the aster family just means all three traditional operational domains now want more of the same. They’re basically competing against each other to get an earlier production slot.
Seems like the biggest worry in the future is drones, so why don’t we develop something to counter them?
Ukraine is launching their own homemade patriots in 2027
It just comes down to France and Italy ramping up production of SAMP and Aster. Leave Germany to eat its American crayons.
As long as countries like Germany buy into the US mic these kind of things will be difficult to make in Europe.
we’re not afraid… and we’ll built love only.
Give us 4 years Mr. Zelenskyi. We will agree on colour of launch button. /s
Why not just licence ukraine to make samp or patriot ammo?
They have the industrial base , the know how when it comes to missile weapons and the need!

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on Britain, France, and Germany to support the development of a European-made alternative to the US Patriot air defense system.
According to *The Guardian* on June 9, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy [said](https://www.theguardian.com/world/ng-interactive/2026/jun/09/volodymyr-zelenskyy-interview-russia-putin-drone-warfare-ukraine) the United Kingdom, France, and Germany had agreed to help Ukraine strengthen its defenses against ballistic missile threats following talks in London on June 7 with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and French President Emmanuel Macron.
The discussions focused on countering Russian ballistic missile attacks and addressing shortages of interceptor missiles capable of engaging such targets.
The Patriot system remains one of the few Western air defense platforms able to intercept ballistic missiles, particularly when equipped with PAC-3 MSE interceptors. According to The Guardian, Zelenskyy said each Patriot interceptor costs approximately $4 million, while Ukrainian stockpiles have come under increasing pressure amid continued Russian missile strikes.
According to The Guardian, Zelenskyy proposed that the UK, France, and Germany combine industrial and financial resources to develop a European-controlled interceptor program rather than relying exclusively on US production. In return, Ukraine is prepared to share operational experience gained during more than four years of large-scale warfare.
“The UK is among them. And NATO is very interested in it. This is priceless information. There is a huge volume of it,” Zelenskyy said, as quoted by The Guardian.
Europe currently fields one air defense system with anti-ballistic missile capability, the Franco-Italian SAMP/T system equipped with Aster 30 interceptors. Ukraine received a SAMP/T battery in 2023 and has used the system operationally, although production volumes remain limited compared with demand.
At the same time, Ukrainian defense companies are pursuing domestic alternatives. Ukrainian manufacturer Fire Point recently [released](https://united24media.com/war-in-ukraine/ukraine-just-tested-a-pink-missile-that-could-shape-europes-future-air-shield-19505) footage of tests involving its FP-7.X interceptor missile. Fire Point aims to develop a complete air defense system capable of engaging ballistic targets by 2027.
Fire Point co-founder and chief designer Denis Shtilyerman said the company is targeting a cost below $1 million per interceptor. He noted that defeating a single ballistic missile often requires multiple Patriot interceptors, significantly increasing the cost of each engagement.
