Das römische Weltraumteleskop der NASA startet am 30. August, acht Monate früher als geplant: „Seine 300,8-Megapixel-Kamera deckt mit einer einzigen Aufnahme 100-mal mehr Himmel ab als Hubble.“

Hopefully the name doesn’t get changed because of ego. Nancy Grace Roman was a true pioneer.

      Exciting times!

Note that NASA considers Roman and Hubble complimentary, even though Roman has a much larger field of view with a similar resolution in Infrared, Hubble still has higher resolution for spectroscopy.

Obviously Roman is much more modern, and one expects it to show that in its results. That massive FoV is going to be amazing.

Always love the background to how they obtained the telescope – which is the NRO just had this laying around and donated it to NASA. So were saying „look how much better it is than hubble!“ meanwhile to the NRO this is small potatoes… and they’re looking back at earth, not light-years away!

So cool that Hubble has maintained solid operation despite not being serviced in almost 20 years. I really hope NASA either devotes resources to a manned mission to service it with a potential Starship launch (though the lack of a shuttle-style cargo bay and robotic arm will be huge hurtles to overcome) or to recover it for deorbiting and preservation.

Isn’t saying „covers 100 times more sky“ a round about way of saying it has less zoom?

Ahead of schedule because something’s coming fast and we need better eyes on it. 👀

I know James Webb is infrared but how would this compare to it as far as overall image quality?

I’m quite excited for this telescope launch. Should be very interesting and eye-opening.
