„Hilfe ist unterwegs“, versprach US-Präsident Donald Trump im Januar, als Iraner auf die Straße gingen und zu Tausenden von Regierungstruppen getötet wurden. Sechs Wochen später begann die US-Militäroffensive gegen den Iran. Trump führte mehrere Gründe an, darunter die Behauptung, dass der amerikanische Angriff den Iranern eine Gelegenheit bieten würde, ihr Regime zu stürzen und es durch etwas Besseres zu ersetzen. „Die Stunde eurer Freiheit ist nahe“, sagte er am Abend des Kriegsbeginns in einer Videoansprache an die Iraner. „Wenn wir fertig sind, übernehmen Sie Ihre Regierung.“
Trumps implizite Behauptung war, dass das iranische Volk eine militärische Intervention der USA wünschte. Obwohl einige prominente Iraner im Exil – wie Reza Pahlavi, der Sohn des abgesetzten Schahs – diese Behauptung unterstützten, blieb die Meinung der breiteren iranischen Öffentlichkeit unbekannt. Auch wenn viele Iraner das Regime eindeutig ablehnten, heißt das nicht, dass sie die Bomben der USA und Israels begrüßten.

I think this reflects a common western assumption that people everywhere ultimately want the same political model and are simply prevented from expressing it by dictators or corrupt elites. Different societies often have different ideas of legitimacy, order, and political authority, and not everyone sees liberal democracy as the obvious end state. It’s often difficult for westers to grapple with the idea that ordinary people in other societies may genuinely prefer political systems that prioritize stability, hierarchy, or collective identity over democratic participation.
Is it me or is there some high-level condescension here? Is the assumption not that the government will do what it likes with taxpayers’ money to benefit its closest stakeholders without any concern for the well-being of the foreign citizenry or its domestic constituents? The point is that effective gaslighting can appease the American public such that they get even more latitude in violating the sovereignty of other nations while destabilizing the world?
Comments from Bessent, Israeli sources and, later, Trump himself confirmed they astroturfed the Iranian protests. Maybe I am missing something but it seems like an advertisement for the value in keeping a large portion of Americans misinformed and comfortable in their confirmation bias.
