Ottawa is planning to propose a ban on social media for children under 16 as part of an online harms bill to be introduced Wednesday, but platforms that meet new safety standards may be able to opt back in, according to a source familiar with the forthcoming bill.

The long-awaited online harms bill is expected to also include a requirement for companies to mitigate harmful content.

This would include action to deal with artificial-intelligence chatbots that advocates have been calling on the government to regulate.

The Globe and Mail is not naming the source as they are not authorized to speak publicly about the bill.
The bill is also expected to revive requirements on platforms in previous versions of the bill to swiftly remove child sexual abuse material, and posts encouraging children to self harm.

    2. There will be draconian age verification processes for adults tied to this, it’s always under the guise of protecting the kids that the most invasive stuff gets passed.

    3. Sorry Canadian parents, you are too incompetent to parent your own children and properly monitor their internet use. We need to take control of internet monitoring for everyone now. This is to protect the kids, okay?

    4. dewgdewgdewg on

Not surprising. I still get ID’d buying beer and I’m 40.

The government treats everyone like toddlers.

    5. leaf_shift_post_2 on

We don’t need a law for this just tell parents not to let their kids use it, or do it’s social media lmao not meth mixed with fent and lsd

    6. Absolutely not this will lead to digital ID which absolutely no one wants . I’m not veryfing my age every time i go on the internet the government can f*** off

      It better include Reddit.

Also, how does this impact bots? Hopefully for the better.

I don’t like it, but I don’t have any hope of stopping it, so I’d like to get as much positives out of it as possible.

    8. I guessed as much given the fact that „protect our children“, „safeguard children’s online activities“ and variations thereof appeared four times in last week’s release of the AI Strategy, generally in the context of social media.

If I was a betting person, this may extend to AI chatbots given the wording „Protect Canadians, particularly children, against AI risks and online harms“ in the AI strategy.

Don’t get me wrong, there is no social media ban explicitly referenced in the AI Strategy, I’m reading in context, and it becomes more likely with this news (as well as this weekend’s news from the UK about their proposed under-16 social media ban).

Does the best research show that social media has mental health effects that orbit the null?

      Yes.

      Does this violate everyone’s privacy?

      Also yes.

If the UK’s hilarious mismanagement of ID being required for Discord has taught us anything, it’s the government needs to fuck off and stay out our lives.

The fact that people want this country to be a nanny state because parents are too incompetent to do their jobs is disturbing.

    11. Ok-Jellyfish-2941 on

I argue the ban should include much more than kids. Social media has the potential to go down in the history as a key instrument in the downfall of modern society.

    12. chaseonfire on

Kids shouldn’t be on social media but that’s really up to the parents to decide. Forcing everyone to input private personal data online just to keep using what they have been using for decades is government overreach.

    13. And there it is, this is how Ottawa is going to implement some sort of bullshit digital ID to track what people are doing online. Fuck I hate this Government, such a nanny state.

    14. publicworker69 on

I like the idea of it cause social media is a cancer to society. But in practice, I like it a little less. Having to submit my personal ID to a private corporation isn’t something I like to do (although knowing today’s climate, they probably have everything)

    15. We’ve seen how poorly this has gone in other places (uk).

I don’t understand why people are cheering on a plan to invade their private lives. Is no questioning the implications and actual implementation?

Just talk to your kids, be an actual parent.

We don’t want a nanny surveillance state.

    16. Why is the UK also planning on doing that imminently? [https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/clyel81vgnxo](https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/clyel81vgnxo)

Surely this is a pure coincidence, and has absolutely nothing to do with a globalized push for requiring ID checks for everyone to freely use the internet. Just what is it they’re so afraid of that requires this?

    17. DasBlueSkull on

Yeah good luck enforcing that. This is a stupid plan.

The government needs to stop acting like we are children. It should be the parents discretion to determine technology use. If a parent cannot control what your child is exposed to, then they shouldn’t of been a parent.

    18. brandonholm on

Holy hell why do Canadians continue to elect draconian governments.

Between the gun grab, the “lawful” access bill, and now this, we are heading towards government tyranny.

    19. How about we implement the safeguards universally regardless and levy significant fines of x% of total global revenues per instance/per user of failing to implement and maintain the safeguards?

Start with killing endless scroll, autoplay, and algorithmic content recommendations. Require search and subscription by default.

    20. Sea-Safety-6130 on

It won’t make a difference. It won’t work. This is way too much government reach. Who pays if the kid breaks the ban?

    21. Prairie_Sky79 on

I guess that these wannabee totalitarians are going to get their way then. Their measures will be imposed „for your own good“, and they’ll not be bothered because they are „only doing what is right“.

    22. Canadianman22 on

Do not hand over your ID to anyone for using social media. It will be a massive target and will be hacked very quickly like in the UK. Just stop using social media if it happens. Don’t get a digital ID. Don’t have over your private details.

    23. Titsfortuesday on

Instead of letting everyone upload their ID to servers just waiting to be hacked, why not try and go after the parents for not properly using parental controls that are already on every device?

    24. brutal.

we need to boot the Liberals so badly.

i cannot believe they won again.

      Liberal voters are cruel.

    25. This is clearly the government’s way of forcing a digital id and tracking everyone’s internet usage, under the lie of “protecting children”.

    26. AngeloPappas on

Nope. This decision should be left to parents. No way I’m opting in for some age verification, privacy invading bullshit just so the government can say kids are being kept of sm. Within moments kids will learn how to bypass any protections anyways.

    27. iamjoesredditposts on

Normal people – ‚oh well… social media is a cess pool and don’t use it. Continue living life‘

Others – ‚No! don’t give out your details! Screw the govt! I will protect my children!‘ and goes back to spending all day posting total crap on social media and has zero life.

    28. Insearchofwater_88 on

This is a slippery slope that won’t end well. I can enforce what is and isn’t appropriate for my children on my own, thanks.

    29. Geeseareawesome on

Watch Alberta introduce an even worse set of rules along side this so they can turn around and yell „look what you made me do!“

That, or they’ll try to NWC it out of spite.

    30. Winter8Bones on

Or how about we hold these platforms to some sort of standards for the content they host and share!?!

    31. EnvironmentBright697 on

Everyone knows the way this is going to be enforced right?… not good

    32. thetruerift on

This is a fucking awful idea. It will require constant age verification everywhere, and that means sharing **my** identity docs with a bunch of private companies who’s data security is frankly trash, and who aren’t even based in this country.

    33. Honestly after seeing how braindead and gullible ~30% of Canadians are because of social media, I think this is the only way to at least try to give kids a fighting chance at learning how to form their own opinions and think critically without the influence of social media.

At the same time, you know they’re going to use this to fuck with censoring adult content and requiring ID for every single thing we do online, so the language of these laws has to be extremely specific and not generic/vague. Probably just a daydream at this point after seeing how open for interpretation the latest bill targeting VPNs was, but it’s an extremely slippery slope that will definitely be taken advantage of for government overreach if there’s no accountability.

    34. Kristalderp on

This doesnt work at all in other countries that tried implementing this.

Parents should be parenting and limiting phone time and social media in general. Stop having the government do it ffs.

    35. StoryAboutABridge on

The Liberal Party of Canada is indisputably the worst thing to happen to Canada in Canadian history.

    36. Love how parents are never held accountable… nope, let’s use this ‚crisis‘ as reason to strip privacy away from everyone. One more step towards their beloved DigitalID.
