The problem is, with authority so concentrated in Putin, his position helps guards him against threats to his rule. Oligarchs may despise the man but the alternative of a chaotic Russia, even a fragmented one, is too much to bear for their selfish interests. The further this goes on though, the worse the Plan B’s become and it is like a cancer that is entering Stage 4 where the treatment might kill the patient.

Well, reality is much simpler or much complicate – whatever way you would think about. He started a war that he was thinking would be quick and successful and trapped on it. Now he need any explanation – and for others and for himself too – why is this war need. Same with all those impotent people around him. They want to stay there in their positions, can not just say „sorry, we been wrong“ So they need a legend around it.

Aleksandr Dugin is so irrelevant when it comes to Kremlin and why this war started, how much of an effect he actually had on Putin is highly questionable. but I can appreciate this bs narrative from the media, it’s convincing, Russian extremist with his theories on Russian imperialism…Western media should all day long bring this guy to their readers‘ attention, it’s a slam dunk.
You don’t need to justify the war to Moscow, the consensus in Moscow is that there is and has been since 2014 a development in Ukraine that poses a threat to their security and if you’re curious about that threat then you can read about it here : https://www.rand.org/pubs/research_reports/RR3063.html
> An increase in U.S. security assistance to Ukraine would likely lead to a commensurate increase in both Russian aid to the separatists and Russian military forces in Ukraine, thus sustaining the conflict at a somewhat higher level of intensity.
> Alternatively, Russia might counter-escalate, committing more troops and pushing them deeper into Ukraine. Russia might even preempt U.S. action, escalating before any additional U.S. aid arrives. Such escalation might extend Russia; Eastern Ukraine is already a drain. Taking more of Ukraine might only increase the burden, albeit at the expense of the Ukrainian people. However, such a move might also come at a significant cost to Ukraine and to U.S. prestige and credibility. This could produce disproportionately large Ukrainian casualties, territorial losses, and refugee flows. It might even lead Ukraine into a disadvantageous peace.
That’s accurate….the US knew full well that Russia would intervene militarily.
> On 20 February 2018, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko changed the status of the ATO zone from an anti-terrorist operation to „taking measures to ensure national security and defense, and repulsing and deterring the armed aggression of the Russian Federation in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts“
Taking measures….more like taking orders from the US to ensure that Russia doesn’t have access to its strategic interest in Eastern Ukraine/Crimea, but anyway this operation resulted in tens of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers heading towards Eastern Ukraine and that’s a problem for Russia that needs to be addressed.
People really need to snap out of this Putin imperialist bs and get real.

The correct answer to the title is early stages of dementia or alzhiemers. Like all world leaders above the age of 60.
