**Through the Government’s free breakfast club programme in England ten million breakfasts have been served benefiting over 300,000 children across 1,250 clubs, helping to save families £450 a year.**

The benefits of free breakfast clubs go beyond childcare savings, making a real difference for pupils with children getting stronger results in reading, writing and maths where they are more settled and ready to learn, allowing teachers to focus on lessons and not behaviour.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson, said: “I am really proud we’ve now delivered ten million breakfasts to kids across the country. Thanks to this Government, every primary school child will be offered a place at a free breakfast club, meaning no child will start the school day hungry.

“These clubs are making a real, practical difference — saving parents up to £450 and 95 hours a year, giving them the flexibility they need to get to work, take on more hours, and support their families. That is what this government means when we talk about breaking down barriers to opportunity.” (…)

Amanda Bradley, headteacher of Bewdley Primary School in West Midlands, added: “The free breakfast club has really helped to enhance our offer, as a school and has had a positive effect on our attendance, particularly with some of our harder to reach families.

“It’s helped to encourage some of our pupils who find mornings tricky to come into school gradually, having a slice of toast and a chat with their friends, rather than coming in and go straight into learning. We’ve been able to help lighten the load for some of our working parents as it’s given them the flexibility of dropping children in school earlier without incurring additional costs.”

There is a certain group of losers that will call this left wing lunacy verging on communism.

      It benefits useless parents.

25p for toast and eggs, or cereal.

      I’m tired.

Imagine seeing a kid get toast before maths and thinking, “This is what’s wrong with Britain.”
Ten million free breakfasts. Hundreds of thousands of children starting the day less hungry. Parents saving a bit of money. Teachers dealing with kids who can actually concentrate.
That’s not some grand ideological collapse. It’s cereal.
And honestly, if your politics can’t survive a child getting a bowl of cornflakes, maybe your politics are the problem.

We should genuinely celebrate this as a significant achievement, well done to the government and schools rolling this out

      Lazy little shits.

They should earn their breakfast and it’s a single bacon rasher.

      Bring back, chimney sweepers.

Good. Good for kids, good for parents and good for a productive society.

    8. Is this for low income households or everyone? Seems like if the school is open anyway could it extend either access for kids or also breakfast – for a fee – for those that aren’t low income but would find the flexibility invaluable if both partners work full time?

    9. Think-Sand7161 on

      Free?
Some poor schmuck has to pay for them while the parents of these kids shirk their responsibility.

Also this isn’t breakfast. There is no bacon!

Children eating breakfast? Outrageous! Next you’ll be telling me they’re getting a free education!

This is where money SHOULD be going, protecting and feeding kids. Helping those who need it

      10,000,000/300,000 = 33.333

1 month of free breakfasts for each of those kids, pretty neat. Can we as a nation make this last the whole year?

    13. Without wanting to sound awkward.

Who are the other 9.7m people benefiting from these free breakfasts?

This is more than just kids eating breakfast. It impacts health, education and social care policy in a positive way.

It can even be connected to the ‘Back British Farmers’ as some schools have connections with local farms.

Hopefully, in a few years, this is just business as usual and isn’t framed in a political way.

I was on free school meals around 2010-2015 but it was limited to a £2 token that we could spend on anything we liked. But the only remotely filling meals you could „afford“ with that was pasta and cheese or pasta and tuna. So I ended up spending 5 years of my life on a a daily diet of exact same as yesterday combined with possible mercury poisoning. I don’t know what it’s like nowadays but I hope the schools have at least had the creativity to provide free salads by now.

    16. Crichtenasaurus on

Problem with it is that they dont supplement the school with the cost of the meal.

My school is losing 30p per pupil per day where the gov is underpaying compared to what the caterers charge.

Kids are at school on time, fueled for the day, less pressure on parents in the mornings, it’s proven to help with their education.

Awesome. Can we do this for lunches too. Even billionaire Ricky over there. The barrier for free school lunches is stupid. It doesn’t matter how much their parents earn, they still need to eat, and no one should feel singles out.

    18. Mobile_Cookie_8817 on

I think calling it Breakfast Club for the sole purpose of just eating breakfast is misleading. My kids go to breakfast club because it provides wraparound care so I’m able to start work on time. They still eat breakfast at home. Same with most other parents who send their kids there.

Note that there is no mention of what it costs to deliver this. Its supposed to be free in every primary school by now, note that it is not.

    20. You_moron04 on

If my taxes are going to free kids meals, I genuinely would love to meet someone who thinks it’s a terrible idea.

    21. Should make lunches free in primary school too. With how many children qualify already, and the fact that Sadiq Khan made them free for all in London already, we’re probably already at over half of UK children qualifying. Might aswell do it for all at that point and it’ll get rid of all the time and admin fees from managing children’s money balances. It’ll make sure every kid is eating a decent lunch which then makes them more attentive for the afternoon lessons.

It’ll be something instantly noticeable to millions of voters every day which might help get them on your side.

Plus all the money will go to UK school meal companies or school cooks anyway, so the money stays in the UK and ends up back with the government via taxes, more vat from parents having more spending money, and increased employment.

Its a no brainer. Works in London.

    22. No_Manager_0x0x0 on

Is this another case of ‘free’ where politicians bribe you/pay for stuff with your own tax money? Not averse to poor kids getting fed by any stretch of the imagination but free doesn’t exist

    23. kingjim1981 on

So it should. Nothing wrong with that. There can’t be much worse than knowing kids are going hungry while at school.

    24. Complex_Anybody6319 on

      Something to be proud of.

But what is the context behind this? Kids on welfare given breakfast or just to all children? Either way it is a good in society.

    25. bars_and_plates on

This is pretty bad marketing to be honest.

I used to go to breakfast club and we had toast and butter. It was great but it was definitely not because my parents couldn’t afford a 5p slice of toast.

It was because then they could get to work at better times / earn more.

I think that marketing it in this way basically gives the ‚free win‘ of saying that the parents should just pay for breakfast because you would have to be spectacularly shit as a parent to not be able to make a bowl of porridge or something. That isn’t why these things exist.
